She just naturally acquired this clutch from the hens using that nest. When it was full, I separated her. So, no they are not the same age. She’s still sitting so I’ll leave them be until she stops. I candled them and removed the ones that weren’t viable.
Here’s a weird one—y’all will...
I have a mix of fertile eggs from my flock under my broody. Three chicks hatched in the last 4 days. How long do I let her keep the remaining eggs after the first is hatched? They’ve been under her around 21 days, but I don’t know exactly b/c it’s her first time to hatch.
I have a pair of Pekin ducks that we let free range during the day on 2 acres, minimal fence. They use less than 2000 sq ft of the yard and love to hang out on my porch (think mess!) when they aren’t foraging. They have a pool in their dog run modified coop. I put out 5 hay bales to block the...
I wanted to take a moment to report that our duck seems to be making a full recovery. I was encouraged by some old posts here, but sometimes threads just end without the conclusion—did the bird survive or not? Duke and his brother Quack are staying in their dog-run during the day and sleeping...
I failed to mention both ducks are having green watery poop since the attack. Could this be from the electrolyte solution they were on? Is there anything I can do to clear that up? They are now on solid (normal) food, some English peas and water + ACV.
Does anybody ever have trouble getting their ducks to move out after they’ve been spoiled like this? :D
The injured guy is on the left and he’s doing much better each day. We’re making plans to bring them when we travel to family this week for Thanksgiving. I can’t thank y’all enough for...
Everybody was free ranging when the attack occurred and I’ll keep them locked up for a while. The chickens alerted to a predator this morning at 3:10 a.m. so I know we still have a row to hoe. I’m confident in the chicken coop. Do the ducks need the same level of security? I have assumed...

I appreciate everyone’s encouragement. I did not think there was hope for him and was resigned to let him live his last hours with his brother in their pen last night. Then I thought to jump on here and was so encouraged by another injured duck post, I completely...
Here’s the wound. To orient the photo, you can see his right eye and part of his head and right foot.
He is more lively this morning and even quacked. He stood up and lifted his head like normal. He ate food on his own when I put it near his mouth.
I applied triple antibiotic ointment...
Our family has been hit hard this week. Our beloved dog got very ill, but is now on the mend. Today we had a predator attack and it looks like we lost a guinea, a Wyandotte, and an English Orpington. These drakes are our boys’ pets and one was severely injured by whatever got the other fowl...
:p
Potoemac would like this. I will try to explain it to him, but we’ve always said he doesn’t really speak English. :p He’s definitely the king around here.
Yes, Potoemac is an Airedale Terrier! He turned 10 years old in September. He grew up helping with the chickens and I’ve never lost one to him. He has chased guineas on occasion, but the ducks actually chase him.
I need to sell this 8 month old rooster (named Johnny Cash ). I bought him with 8 other black English Orpington chicks from a large Texas hatchery (The Feathered Hatchery) but knew right away that he was not one of them. I am not personally familiar with Black Sumatras; they also breed Ayum...
