Thank you for the thoughtful suggestion. This isn't a pecking injury. She was slow feathering from the beginning and they just never grew in on her neck for some reason. 🤷♀️ The little girls have been outside with the big girls for 2 weeks now (with a dog crate on its side in the run for them...
One of our newest 7 week old chicks, a Barnevelder named Dame Eggy Smith, has been lagging behind the others in most things (all things really). As we're preparing them to join our big girls next week, I'm concerned about her slow feathering, specifically a bald patch on her neck, and if she'll...
We have a docile 3 year old Welsumer, Chikira, who started growing spurs as a pullet. We live in the city so have no rooster. This year they've grown quite large. (Pictured below)
She's not a fighter so I'm not concerned for that reason, but she is our broodiest hen and hardest to break (she's...
Howdy everyone!
We'll be getting a couple chicks from Meyer Hatchery this spring if anyone is interested in jumping on the order to save on shipping.

If you're not familiar with them, they're based in Ohio. We love them as a hatchery; we've had really good...
So she's seeming to be feeling much better today. We had some good poops and she's eating. Would I be mistaken to think that there might be tapeworm segments in her poop?
I've given her one dose of safe guard (I added it on to of some moist food because I get very nervous to administer by...
That's not something I have in my chicken aid kit. Google suggests I can get that at maybe a CVS. Is there a specific dosage I should be looking for? Would some oyster shells in addition to that be helpful? I am discovering, I think, in our few issues that we've had, that when something goes...
We have not this year. I have some safe-guard somewhere. I guess it's no harm to start her on that while I wait and continue to evaluate her symptoms?
She's eaten almost nothing today, but has drank water. Has only pooped the once, still.
I should add, though I don't think it's related, that we are amidst an extended heat wave in NYC, Birdadette is a RIR and does really well in the heat, much better than our EE who is managing just fine. Also she's just over 2 years old.
Our loner but *very food motivated* hen has been uninterested in treats and laging behind more than usual for the past 2 days. Last night when she wasn't interested in some fruit scraps I became concerned and checked her crop, which was very soft. I checked in on them after dark and she had some...
Hey folks. One of my girls looks to be ill, I'm thinking it might be a GI infection. I'm trying to hunt down some Baytril. I found some online but it'll take a few days to ship. Does anyone have some sitting around or know where to find some locally?
Thanks!
Anyone have any contacts to a rescue in the area or someone with adult hens needing to re-home? My neighbor just lost 3 of 4 to a nasty and unfortunate raccoon attack and she's looking for some laying girls to keep her remaining hen company.
I'm still trying to convince the better half, but if that happens, is anyone interested in doing an order together? Save on shipping, beat the minimums?
Happy weekend!
Wanted to share this weird habit my hens have developed. They have such a preference for one nesting box suddenly, that they'll wait in line outside for it, and if they don't get their turn in time, they'll just lay right where they were waiting. 🤦♀️
There's also a brand of poison I've heard mixed reviews about that don't harm other animals that might eat the poisoned ones: mouse x and rat x. What was your homemade bait made of?
Congrats!!! How many chicks and what kind?!
Predators are absolutely fairly easily managed in NYC.
What's your design plan?
We have our run covered in 1/2" hardware cloth, with a 3 foot deep hardware cloth skirt around the entire run and hen house. You can also bury hardware cloth or chicken...
Spotted this guy hanging out above the coop when I let the chickens run free in the yard. Thinking about getting a guardian dog, but we *do* still live in NYC. Anyone have small or medium sized dogs that are good with their hens? Maybe with a less energetic temperament than a traditional working...
