Early this morning he passed away. I tried so hard to medicate him and get him the help he needed, but he just didn't improve. He was only 10 days old from hatch, but the pain I feel losing him is no different than losing some of my long time pets.
If I could go back in time I would have got...
They gave us 7 pre-measured syringes for the Meloxicam. We gave him a dose with his antibiotics at 12. Just hearing him quiet down a bit, eat, and sleeping peacefully is an improvement but it hurts me to see him like this. With my chickens I used chucks as pads on the landing below their roost...
I brought the rabbit cage in. I almost ordered the pellets but wasn't sure which ones to get. My friend thought they the pellets I was buying were too small and they were scared he would try and eat them. I hooked up a second heat lamp. This one is infrared and I have the ceramic one higher up...
Thanks for the information. I would definitely need to get him a friend because I assume ducks don't perch so wouldn't want him feeling like the ugly duckling (chicken).
Day 2 his breathing seemed a little less rapid. Seems like he is crying less. We hate having 2 stick a syringe down his...
I was actually pet sitting these starting on day of hatch. Owner had to leave town on emergency but this was their first attempt at getting ducks for pets. They left me a rabbit cage lined with pine shavings. I was just worried about the heat retention and not being able to get the heat lamp...
So originally he was alone in a fairly large cardboard box. I was going to use pine shavings but I decided to line with paper towels and small towels.
As soon as the other 2 hatched it became a free for all. They would go back and forth between food and water and everything was getting wet. I...
Thanks, that's a good idea. I feel bad for him because the others are a little pushy and like to cuddle but he's not in the mood. This was originally a 1 week baby sitting job for a couple eggs and now I'm trying to save this little guys life.
I should add an update. I took him to an emergency vet that has bird vets on staff. They listened to him and hear a crackling in his lungs. They believe its possible a respiratory infection or pneumonia. He spent 2 days alone in the brooder before the others hatched. He may have inhaled a little...
I am also finding that he seems a little lethargic. His movements are very slow paced. The other couple like to play in the water and are very active. He kind of just plops down and keeps his movement limited.
One of the baby ducks I hatched this week is seemingly panting. It's weird because his body is moving like he is breathing heavy. It's not from heat because he does it both in and out of the brooder. I don't know if it's a breathing issue, a heart issue, or what but you can see his body going up...
Hello,
I posted yesterday about my hatched duckling. Now I am worried about the other couple pips. One of the eggs pip'd yesterday afternoon and another one had a pip on the bottom of the egg. The hatched duckling may have pushed around the eggs while drying off in the incubator. I wish I knew...
So he stayed in the incubator for around 4 hours. He was twisting, turning, and crawling over the other eggs trying to break free from the bottom half of the shell. I went back at dinner break and he seemed dry and got free of the cord and shell. He was very aware and seemed ready to move on so...
Thanks. I have it set up with a very shallow water dish but I also worried about it drowning. That's a good point about getting stuck under the heat lamp. At least when I'm not there I feel much safer leaving them in the brooder.
Hmmm. Originally I read a checklist that said to move it to the brooder after 1 hour of drying. Then when googling I saw lots of advice to leave it in the incubator for 12-24 hours. Personally I don't like the incubator as it's crowded, has a grated floor, and overall just seems uncomfortable...
Ok thanks for the reply. Is it safe to leave him for a few hours while I go to work or is there maintenance that needs to be performed besides keeping humidity at 70?
I know nothing about ducks. A friend had an emergency during hatch week and asked me to watch them while they hatch. Everything I read has different advice. Currently 1 hatched and others haven't pip'd yet. The one is dragging the shell all over the incubator and connected by umbilical. I'm late...

Thanks. I actually have the same mentality with DE. The times I have used it, it has caused more harm than good. It created respiratory problems for both me and the chickens. Even with a light sprinkle in their run I found that it made its way into the house and became hard to breath in there. I...
