One of my pullets (4.5 weeks old) has been sneezing, shaking her head (sometimes mucus comes out when she sneezes or shakes her head), and breathing out of her mouth. From what I can tell, she's not wheezing and doesn't have watery eyes or colored mucus. She also has good energy and has been...
If she makes it through the night, I recommend doing what the vet says about stitching her up. After that, I would put Neosporin on it and, if it still looks bad, get penicillin to keep off infection. You can get injectable penicillin from places like Southern States or Tractor Supply. There's a...
I don't have any close up pictures of her wound, but here are some example pictures. She had a wound on her back and under her wing that looked really similar to the one on your chicken.
Neosporin is great! That's what I used. I also used the penicillin pictured below by giving her shots of it with a sterile needle, which I think saved her life because it kept sepsis from getting into her system. There is lots of information about how much and how to use it on chickens. As long...
My chicken had a similar injury from a fox, and she has made a full recovery. We gave her shots of penicillin, and I think that it kept her from getting infected. Chickens are surprisingly resilient. If she is in extreme pain, I would put her down, but if she seems to be fighting, I would try to...
Hmm good question, I didn't notice that about the wings. Maybe a black old english game bantam? The baby looks really similar to the pictures on cackle hatchery's website.
The black and white one looks like a barred rock chick. They also typically have that breed at Tractor supply, so it would be likely. Barred rocks are some of my favorite! Very spunky and easily tamed.
Also, if you don't want to eat them or send them somewhere where they will be eaten, I've had good experiences with contacting petting zoos and places like that! Usually they will take a rooster, only if he's nice to people though.
Keep an eye on her, but she should be okay. Chickens eat many weird things, and their digestive system is pretty hardy. If you haven't already, I would get your chicks grit (you can buy it at most places that sell chick food) to help her digest it. Because the string isn't sharp, it should pass...
I just found out that my sweet baby hen (about 2.5 weeks old) might actually be a rooster! He is such a sweetheart--very cuddly and tame already. I've never been able to keep roosters because they've always ended up being too rough on the hens and mean to people. Does anyone have any advice on...
Thank you both for your detective work! He totally looks like one! I'm excited to see how he (or maybe she-still having hope for a she haha) turns out as he grows!
Thank you for the welcome! Do you have any guesses as to this little baby's gender? We're hoping not a roo! The baby is so sweet though, we have decided we won't give him/her away if she does turn out to be a rooster.
We just got some new babies, and all of them have known breeds except for the "mystery chick" we received. Are there any ideas on what she might be? She has red, brown, and silver/white coloring and what look to be bands on her wings. She also has bare legs. Thank you in advance!
