Missing feathers- normal or cause for concern?

A couple more pics. I picked up and looked the first one over (my Wyandotte) and it looks like she might have a vent prolapse too?!?

Missing feathers- normal or cause for concern?

I have 11 chickens that are a year old. Starting in late fall and throughout winter several of them (6 by my count) lost feathers in what appeared to be normal molting...some lost a lot all over and some lost mainly all around the neck and a few spots on the body. All grew back just fine. I now...

    Surprise! Instant chicken mama.

Also, are you able to get close enough to them to pick them up? Given their lack of previous care I would try to check them for external parasites (mites and lice) if possible. From your one picture they don’t look ragged so hopefully that isn’t an issue!

    Surprise! Instant chicken mama.

Sorry somehow I missed your pics! Where are you located? The roosts outside seem odd, and for 16 hens you would only need about 4-5 nest boxes. I would move the roost inside the coop if there is room, or take out some nest boxes. I’m guessing at one time they had a lot more chickens and they...

    Surprise! Instant chicken mama.

How horrible! Will never understand how people can treat animals with so little care. I would first throw all the eggs. I would make sure the coop has been thoroughly cleaned and disinfected, including the nest boxes. I would put fresh bedding in the coop and fresh nesting material in the boxes...

    Help - vent too small

I am wondering whatever happened with your chicken. I am having the same symptoms with my 10 month old hen. She had been a pretty regular layer until a pretty significant molt about a month ago. Same small vent symptoms and the same type of leakage.

How bad does molting affect a chicken?

Thank you! With my current set up I would not be able to put her in a crate by herself with the other chickens. I have a raised coop with an attached run (total size is about 6x10 including what’s underneath the coop) and a very large outdoor pen. Even in the cold weather they spend a good...

How bad does molting affect a chicken?

I have 11 chickens that are about 10 months old. Two of them are a hybrid/mutt called starlight green eggers. They were bought at the same time from the same place. We live in WI and it has gotten cold but not frigid. One of them is fine...no real drop in egg production, looks fine, very active...

    Prairie Bluebell Egger

Almost 100% positive she’s a PBB...she lays the prettiest light blue eggs just about every day now! 😊

Supposed to be SLW, and about 12/13 weeks old

This looks an awful lot like my cuckoo maran. I have one of those and a barred rock...to me when you look at them the maran looks more overall black, and the barred rocks/dominiques look more overall gray. But I’m a newbie this year too so I could be wrong. It isn’t a SLW though that’s for sure...

Cuckoo Maran lying down a lot

I just corner them in the pen. Last night I grabbed her off the roost and checked her over and I didn’t see or feel anything weird. I had concerns about egg binding but...I would think she’d seem a little worse if that was the case.

Cuckoo Maran lying down a lot

Newish chicken owner with a weird question. I have a cuckoo maran that is about 6 months old, in a flock of 11. Not the best layer yet from what I can tell, and a few days ago there was a soft shell egg that I think might have been hers, and may have been laid off the roost. She is lying down a...

    Keeping Chickens off the concrete?

This is an old post but just in case someone stumbles on it like I did... I had the same problem in a favorite flower bed. Didn’t care where else they went but this one bed I had several unique hostas and day lilies. I bought a motion activated sprinkler called the Scare Crow. Holy buckets did...

My EE is not laying in the nest box

That’s exactly what it seems like- that she didn’t know what was happening and it just kinda popped out. I have others that sit in the nest box forever (not broody just taking their time) but I’ve never even seen her in there. She does not dawdle that’s for sure :idunno

My EE is not laying in the nest box

Thanks! So many new things to learn. I’m interested in these egg wipes...where did you get them? Do you have to refrigerate the eggs after using? I’ve never had any really dirty eggs, just a smudge here and there that my OCD needs to get cleaned off lol. I don’t wash the eggs and would prefer to...

Poo stuck on some chickens’ bottoms

I had a Cuckoo Maran that had this issue. I overanalyzed and was sure she was suffering internally and was gonna die of something, but just turns out she has a lot (and I mean A LOT) of butt fluff. I trimmed the feathers down and no more issues. Note: if you’re doing this outside on a windy day...

My EE is not laying in the nest box

Well she’s gotten better...it’s about 50/50 on whether or not she lays in the box but we’ve gotten them in the coop or nest box only, not in the run or pen. Progress! They do seem a little dirty... there’s always a smudge of something on them. I don’t have that with other eggs and I keep the...

My EE is not laying in the nest box

Thanks! I am hoping that she settles down a bit with more experience...she seems a little freaked out by the whole process lol

My EE is not laying in the nest box

Yes I put some ceramic ones in there and move them around between the 3 every day

My EE is not laying in the nest box

I’m new to chicken raising and My EE Hazel is having some trouble. She laid her 4th egg today and none have been in the nest box. The first day she laid she was very nervous and agitated for an hour or so. I was outside the whole time, went around the side of the house for a few minutes and when...
