FLYSTRIKE!! I need info *GRAPHIC PHOTO

Thank you! I know there are always going to be challenges and losses with having animals, but being inexperienced is awful in the sense that I feel like I have to learn so hard lessons by just not knowing enough

Hahaha, I can totally see this happening. We started with 15 and 7 were roosters, so that wasn’t going to work... but I started incubating in March and that became a monthly thing for a little while. I decided to take a break because we ordered ducklings and bam. That’s exactly when my 5 hens...

FLYSTRIKE!! I need info *GRAPHIC PHOTO

I just lost my Rooster to this today. He had a wound from a cat I believe. So awful. It happened quickly and I had never dealt with it before and am very new at raising poultry. I definitely wish I had known all of this information as I would have handled it much differently. I do think DE would...

    WNC poultry vet recommendations

Is anyone located in WNC (preferably Buncombe County) that can recommend a poultry vet or general vet that will preform a chicken fecal test? We’ve got some funky looking poop and want to have it tested. Thanks!

Love it! Sounds like such a colorful flock! This is our first year doing Chickens and after lots of research I decided on the Lavender Orpington’s, but since we have gotten them all I have definitely been wanting to add more breeds! They are kind of addicting!

    Hen is sick

I’ve had really good luck water glassing eggs with just room temp water. I’m definitely going to keep researching the lime, but I would love to find some farmers in my area that can tell me if they personally use it and why or why not. As much as you can find on the internet I still really love...

    What is your favorite quote?

Thank you! Nosy? I love to talk about my Chickens! I have 7 Lavender Orpington hens and 1 Roo (who is currently being nursed back to health in my “hospital room” with an injury, really hope he will be ok) 9 Chicks that are about 3 months old and 3 that are about 2 months. We also have 5 broody...

Ok, good to know. Thank you so much for clarifying!

The biggest difference in DE is how it is processed. Food grade DE is going to be pure where a garden/pool grade could possibly contain insecticides or other chemicals. For human and animal use (personally, I prefer it in the garden as well) I only use food grade. From my understanding lime has...

Brooder size needed for 20 baby chicks?

Yay 20 baby chicks! My first chicks we had 15 in a wire dog crate that was sealed with hardware cloth and it worked well for the first 3 weeks. After that the chicks needed more space and actually started to get injured because they didn’t have enough space and were scratching each other up...

    What is your favorite quote?

“Would you rather be right, or would you rather be happy?” this is what my husbands friend told him... he would usually rather be happy, which works for us because I would usually rather be right. At least I can rightly admit that’s one of my character flaws!

Looks like you’ve found a treatment that is working and I’m so glad she’s improving!

    What is your favorite quote?

I love this. I searched “rude” because I’m new to this group and trying to get a feel for it an also get involved. I have found many people to be kind of abrasive and rude. I’m new at poultry but it’s like, “come on people, aren’t we all here because we love chickens”? A few favorite quotes...

    Hen is sick

Just an idea for an easy/natural/available stool softener that could be purchased from any grocery store with instacart for someone who said they are high risk and have to stay home. It may not be the right solution, I’m sorry if that was bad advice. Just seems like in a situation where you...

    Natural dewormer and parasite treatment/prevention

A regular fecal float test is awesome advice, thank you. I would way rather know exactly what is (or is not going on) than trying to treat something that may not even be an issue because I am just learning the ropes. With so many broody hens I may just go back to the basics and buy an organic...

For stool softeners you could also offer pumpkin, pears or even a little prune juice. Just also making sure to provide lots of water with these

Be really careful with the wine, it may help relax the bird and can also be a diuretic, but has a high sugar content and will also definitely cause inflammation, which is not helpful for any health condition.
