Thank you - the longer I have chickens the less I am saddened by a passing…not to say it doesn’t effect me, but I’m more at peace with it. I just know better than to get super high producing hens from now on because while I love the eggs, I don’t like only having 3/4 years with my hens
Just to update for in the future if anyone references this thread - Clementine ended up passing today. I was doing antibiotics but she stopped making an effort to eat yesterday afternoon, I knew it wouldn’t be long. At least she passed on a nice sunny day. Buried with the rest of my flock that’s...
Do you think I should do another treatment dosing then for 7 days this time then just see how she makes out from there?
I was wondering if it might just be a reproductive issue from being a high producer
I’ve checked her crop to make sure it empties and it does - she was eating some dried mealworms just 2 days ago and now today wouldn’t touch them again.
I’m curious about her eggs because I have a few that lay green ones and I think after collecting she has only laid one in the past 3/4 days...
She is a 3 year old (egger? Idk TS didn’t know when I got her) and for about a week or 2 she hasn’t been herself.
She has been hunched down away from the other hens for a few parts of the day and then kind of with the flock the rest of the time. When I first thought something was wrong I checked...
Thank you - I’m going to work on getting better ventilation in that section of the coop and see if that doesn’t help her improve her eggs and just keep a further eye on her
@omgdoubletacos I purchased mine through the chicken chick on her website. It is 9 mL of it for about $20 plus shipping. Yes, the unit cost is expensive, however, since buying it a year and a half ago I've now had to spray twice, so 2 mL used up and its been so worth it. I calculated it all out...
@Eggcessive I do not see an article showing up?
I had bookmarked one that showed the egg issues and possible causes - all of which points to stress, however, it doesn't say what can cause the stress that leads to these issues. In your experience what could cause stress in a chicken to lay these...
What could be causing my hens funky eggs?
She is a buff laced polish hen 1.5 years old and has been laying her little white eggs for a while. I recently posted because she didn’t lay and was acting odd for a week. I gave her some Durvet calcium and she started back to laying normally, however...
Being 3 years removed from this situation I can reflect on it better than when I was in the moment. I now have a 4 year old and 18 month old boys. I can say that depending on how crazy life can get now, and if this same situation happened to a chicken now, I may or may not have culled her. I do...
I just gave her 1 mL of Durvet Calcium Gluconate since she has now been under the coop which is odd behavior for her so thinking now she may actually be egg bound?
I’m going to give her another dose in the morning. I did feel her abdomen and can’t say for certain there is an egg and her vent...
My 1.5 year old buff polish hen Cheesepuff has been off for about a week. I sprayed my chickens for mites since my rooster had some with elector psp. I noticed the next day or day after that my hen seemed off with her tail down and that she hadn’t laid in a few days.
She ate a good bit of...
That’s fascinating - it definitely had zero color and no odor. I wonder if I will have to drain it again too. I’ll just keep monitoring it for now. She does still have a slighlty fluid filled pouch now (like a deflated balloon) but it is much better. Her rear was probably close to a 5 inch fluid...
So I drained my hen, Miss Olive, and she had a lot of clear odorless liquid that came out. It’s still dripping out from where I had inserted the needle. She definitely has water belly. I hope this helps her feel more normal until it’s her time. She had nothing other than her (thinking about how...
@Eggcessive I checked her today and something’s up - it was full and more tight. I checked the eggs and it appears she laid her egg today. Still haven’t really seen any poop and she’s moving around and eating like normal. I’m going to do what you suggested with the syringe tomorrow. It wouldn’t...
Pretty sure she is still laying 2/3 extra large eggs a week
It didn’t feel warm - just looked irritated. It wasn’t tight. I felt other chickens and it seems about the same just more fatty. Starting to think she’s just a big chicken and probably won’t live as long as my other lean ones I got...
I think I’ll keep an eye on her to see if she is relatively normal and if so maybe let her be I will check out her poops next time I can go out between the rain storms lol. If she seems off again I’ll just do what you said and try to drain her.
She has always been a big and heavy chicken so it...
So I just don’t know if my 3.5 year old barred rock just looks to have a larger swollen-ish area under her vent (water belly?) or if she is just a “big boned” (for lack of a better term) chicken?
She always has a poopy butt, but today it looked red and maybe bigger? I cleaned her up and put...
