Thank you! This is great info. It's been incredibly hot here recently and it's been hard to discern a lack of heat tolerance from actual illness. I will keep my eye on her and maybe get ahold of some fish mox.
I recently wormed my flock of four for capillaria (confirmed with fecal). I did Safeguard liquid, 1 mL/day for 5 days, the last dose was 2 weeks ago. No repeat dose as per advice in these pages cross-referenced with a couple state extension sites. (I have a prior thread from earlier this month...
Oh, interesting! I did one day, 1/2 mL per bird, and a repeat after 10 days on the advice of my vet, BUT she's not a poultry vet (she's my cats' vet, and I just take my chicken fecals to her office) and I could swear that she was referring to them as roundworms (though the tech I spoke to on the...
Thank you!
Yeah, I was wondering if she's just slow to bounce back from the worms and the heat last week -- I really hope that's all it is. I probably caught the worms late -- up until last week I was taking summer classes that didn't leave me much free time. My husband is such a good help with...
Hi. I have four 1+ year old hens, and four 3 month olds (they are kept separately and have not intermingled yet). The big girls have a 4x8 coop and 8 x 16 covered, shaded run. They free-range for about an hour a day.
One of my older girls, Hazel, has been unwell. I'll give as much info as I can...
Thank you! Yes the gate latches on the nest box and door of the run get secured with carabiners. And the ceiling is completely covered in HC, then there's a gap, then the plastic roofing panels (so there's airflow but protection from rain and predators.)
Yes, thank you! I am adding better latches on the inside doors this week. Those doors are inside the run, which is very secure -- I use gate latches secured with carabiners on the run door and the nest box door. I had a raccoon family crawling all over the outside of the run at night all autumn...
Thank you. So my question is, how would the pop door not be a draft...is it because it's working in tandem with the vents up top?
If my ventilation was inadequate what would be the signs? Humidity that's higher than outdoors? Ammonia stink?
I scoop the poop every day. Hemp bedding. Six different breeds, the largest of which are one blue orpington and one marans. Yes, the autodoor opens at dawn.
I have read the detailed Patandchickens post about ventilation, but I want to ask about my coop specifically because I suspect I need more ventilation than I have. This is our first winter with our flock of 6 chickens and I built my coop. I'm in PA outside of Philadelphia -- so, hot, humid...
My 15 week old Orpington is moving slow this morning and sneezing quite a bit, with some slight swelling around her left eye, and I'm guessing it's a respiratory thing. (I live in SE Pennsylvania and coryza is pretty widespread here.) Video attached.
I have Liquamycin 200 and Denegard 12.5 on...
One of our other pullets (Welsummer) is quite red in the comb and wattles as well, and she's def a pullet. But yeah, hard to compare with only one Marans.
We actually just rehomed a roo, a beautiful buff Brahma, same age as the rest, and while he hadn't crowed yet, his behavior was roo all the...
This is our 15 week old blue cuckoo Marans, Clementine. Got her from Meyer - obvs hobby quality, no feathered legs or anything. To my untrained eye she seems like a pullet, but I've gone back and forth since she was a week old. She's our only Marans and have nothing to compare her to. Her...
