    Oyster shells with feed

Good to hear my girls aren't the only ones snarfing down both grit and oyster shells. At least 3 of 9 started laying this week at 19 weeks old and I've had to refill both grit and oyster shell daily. Glad they are eating the oyster shell, though, as we were going to keep them on starter/grower feed.

    Pullet with eye problem

We have an 18 week old Buff Orpington pullet that is having an eye issue. I noticed it on Sunday, it's now Tuesday. Her left eye seemed red, at first I thought maybe some dust got in it but she is still having issues today. I doesn't seem as red now, but she's rubbing the eye on her feathers...

    Heritage Meat Birds

My husband and I processed two Buff Orpington cockerels (15.5 weeks old) on Sunday and had fried chicken tonight! The birds dressed out to just over 3 lbs. each. We have 2-3 more that we will wait a few weeks to dispatch to let them get a bit bigger.

when do you transition to layer feed?

This is what I plan to do, our chickens are 16 weeks old and aren't laying yet, but we plan to keep a rooster so I don't want to switch to layer for his health. I'm just worried they won't eat the oyster shell for some reason, though we haven't even put it out yet! Glad to hear the...

    Kids have difficulty eating chicken?

Just call them what they are. My 17 year old knew from a young age the chickens in the yard and the chicken on the plate are the same thing. He's very loving with animals so that knowledge didn't harm him in any way.

coop w 1 open side, are no-seeums and mosquitos an issue?

If you have them, then yes, gnats, black flies, midges, no-see-ums, whatever they are called in your area can be a problem if they are bad in your area. Where I live we have buffalo gnats for a few weeks in late May/early June, which are active in the daytime, and my local chicken group is...

    Grit free choice or limit?

Thanks, I do think they ate way too much of it in a short period of time. We took it away and will give them some again next weekend. Hopefully when they get in the run they won't be as bored and they can have it free choice then.

    Grit free choice or limit?

Our chicks will be 7 weeks old in two days, we've been mixing in chick grit with the food, but they need to move to the #3 grit (I have the Cherrystone grit) so I put some of that out free choice today. They went to town on it and I'm afraid they are eating too much of it. Should I take it away...

Is wood floor good for hens? Or linoleum?

We have a vinyl floor in the coop covered by pine shavings. The vinyl flooring was left over from a long ago kitchen remodel.

    ChikStick Treat thing?

Interesting! I got a chick stick and they were scared if it! They love earthworms though. Make sure to give them some chick grit if they are getting anything other than starter crumbles.

    Groundhog and vultures

Thanks, we are definitely going to make the top of the run very sturdy so it should be able to hold the weight of a large bird and keep them out (hopefully). I'll discuss with my husband elimiating the groundhog. He says he was going to start setting out traps soon, anyway. We do have all the...

    Groundhog and vultures

We are building a coop and run for our 4 week old chicks. We have an abandoned shed on our property which is fairly close the where the run will be. A groundhog lives under the shed and he usually keeps to himself, but he has gotten up on our deck a couple times and he occasionally runs around...

    I hate gnats!

Sorry about your chickens. Our chicks are only 4 weeks old so still in the brooder but I am preparing for the buffalo gnats to come here in about a month when the chickens will be in the coop and run. We have had large numbers of chickens killed twice before by gnats so I want to be more...

When to add pine litter to the brooder?

We put ours on pine shavings right away too. Double-dipped their beaks to show the water then added the food a few hours later. No problems.

    Treats or Not?

We started giving chick grit sprinkled on food then some small earthworms a few days later when they were just over two weeks old. They loved them. Weren't too crazy about lettuce though.

    New Buff Orpington mom

Hello, we haven't had chickens in a number of years, but just got 15 Buff Orpington chicks this week. They are already starting to get wing feathers! We have 10 females and 5 males, planning on keeping one rooster and hoping for a broody hen. We will move them in a chicken tractor at first but...
