I have a 10 week old mille fleur d'uccle hen. She was sitting with me and I noticed she would open her beak sometimes - it was very red inside. Any ideas why? She's eating, drinking, eyes/nose look normal. Very alert, although missing her rooster companion that recently had to be rehomed.
This is new to me.
So I set up a hutch outside their coop/pen. Of course, she's not happy. But I noticed the other chickens don't want to come into that area - they normally spend much of the day there.
Is it ok that the jail faces the coop and she can see and be seen?
Also, I had her in...
I have four bantam cochins, a year old. I never had a broody with other breeds, so this is new. She's relentless about getting in the nest. I've moved her out countless times, even at night at which time I blocked the nesting box. She is a puffball and growling incessantly. Today, I opened all...
I have two 3 week old mille fleur d'ccles. They were sold as straight run, so it's possible that one or both are roos. Here's a pic of the one with the very pink comb and pinpoint pink wattle. What do you think? The other does not look like this.
Yep, I soaked a warm paper towel and got some off, but not all. She's rather low to the ground, very fluffy. I think this may be an ongoing issue with these little bantams. I may try to bathe her and trim some of the feathers.
I saw the video of stridor - that's exactly how she sounds.
Never had any illness with these bantams, but they are only a year old.
I kept her inside and she seems fine so far this morning, so maybe it was stridor. My concern is the smaller birds that always find a way into my coop to eat the...
My bantam cochin started making honking sounds today. She's still eating and drinking, but seemed to follow me in the pen a bit more, making these weird sounds. I think she may have laid an egg today, the first one in several months.
I brought her in for a cuddle and noticed she was a bit...
I made chicken soup today. After picking the carcass I have a soupy mix of the dregs of the chicken - some meat, broth, skin, etc., parts I don't want in my soup. I usually throw this out, but wondered if the chickens will eat it?
I have 4 bantam Cochins. Two white girls were born in early April, two partridge girls in mid May. One white matured by August and laid her first egg on August 4th. She was fairly steady with laying for two weeks and then nothing. The other girls have not laid at all. They seem perfectly healthy...
I have 2 white bantam cochins, 14 weeks, and 2 partridge bantam cochins, 9 weeks. They have been hanging out all day and started sleeping in the same coop about 4 weeks ago. Everything seemed to be going well until this week. One of the white cochins (Millie) started pecking at the partridge...
I'm guessing this is normal. I have two 7 week white cochin hens that I move into a grassy area during the afternoon. I also have two 3 week old partridge cochin hens that I just started putting out in the same area for a short while - it's very warm here, in the mid 80's. The whites don't...
I think they are cochins - maybe golden laced? They are pretty little things.
ETA: Yep, partridge cochins. What I was calling laced is actually penciling?
Just got two little bantams from Rural King. They were in the assorted bantam bin from Hoover Hatchery and are approximately two weeks old. Any idea what they are? I'm hoping their mille fleurs.
I was told these were both hens, however, the feathers are different. They are six weeks today. The first pic: the chick had this weird bump on the back, but only two days later, feathers are filling in, but the tail feathers are sticking up and the side feathers are long and sweeping back.
In...
