Get the dog! As with any new introduction make it a slow one with supervision. The dog needs obedience training ASAP whether from you, or with help from your local pet shop. A trained dog is a happy dog. You want to be your pups focus, the apple of his eye.
Ive lived everyday of my life on a...
Have fun with your order, poultry is a wonderful adventure!
Great advice! Thank you. My youngest son loves the birds and would like to show them he says. Our oldest shows livestock in 4H, but there is no poultry club.
We really do enjoy the chickens! Im a fool for Roosters (because they are so...
I havent heard of Welp. I'll have to check them out.
I think Im going to do the Brown Leghorns, RIRs, Sussex, and Favorelles for my first order. I think. So many birds to choose from!
Ive ordered from several over the years.
I ordered some great chicks from Hoover last year. Nice strong chicks. Im pretty sure they offer free shipping, but have weird # per gender minimums year.
I feel like Cackle is pricey on shipping. But, probably worth sitting and doing the math on $per...
Glad to hear from someone who has a Deleware, I think they are very pretty!
Ive also thought about trying Favorelle and have read they coop well with Sussex, which I love.
So many chickens to choose from!
That makes sense with filling pullet orders and then filling straight run with what is left. Would work out fine with the dual purpose birds to get the Roos.
I typically do well selling Roos. Having the prettier varieties, Roos show off the breed better than the hens and are pretty coop...
I live in Virginia, we have pretty moderate weather and have never had any issues with heat or cold affecting my birds.
Not all of the breeds need to be dual purpose. Like the Brown Leghorns, would be for eggs and chick sales only. There are old school folks that like white eggs for eating...
Thanks for the replies!
We had a black sex link hen - we loved her! She definitely had a ton of personality.
This poses one of my most wondered questions- When you buy sex link chicks from the hatcheries and it says "straight run" does the hatchery give you half and half gender wise?
I do...
What breeds should I order? What hatchery?
I currently have Orpingtons (Crele&Lavs), LF Cochins, and Polish.
I am a seasoned chicken owner, who enjoys incubating and raising chicks. I do sell chicks and mature birds every so often as supplemental income, and to keep my flocks young and...
From my experience it will probably correct itself. I would not intervene right away. Let the hatch finish, the chicks dry out, and then assess again later. That is fairly minor in size, so I think it will be fine.
The 2nd appears to be a pullet. What breed are they? Somtimes watching behavior some will also help determine who is what. High head and proud body posture will indicate a Roo.
Thank you! He is a coop ornament for sure! I bought hatching eggs and hatched him and some others - I rehomed the rest. I focus on Crele and Lavendar Orpingtons, Partridge Cochin, and Light Brahmas!
Thank you for your suggestions! I do have a couple hen saddles on the girls. Its the back of their head that is the issue really, has ruined their crests.
Im thinking I will try a new Rooster. I saw him breed the same hen 3 times back to back a couple of days ago. He may just be excessively...
I posted this in the managing your flock thread and no one answered. I have a small Silkie flock - 4 hens 1 roo. Bought them established. 3 out of 4 hens have no feathers on the backs of their heads and bare spots on the wings. The hen that has feathers isnt a bully, she is actually last in the...
Hello Silkie Experts!
I am not new to chickens, but I am less than months in to raising Silkies and selling hatchlings locally.
I have 4 hens and 1 roo that I bought as an established flock. They lay well and the eggs hatch very well with healhty strong chicks!
My question - how do you...
