5 weeks + 3 days old.
Rhode Island Red (or possibly Red Sussex Cross as seller had both types).
This is Nessie.
Nessie has slightly less variation in her feather colours overall than Ramona (posted separately). But Nessie has a bit of much lighter colouring at the tip of her wings. I think both...
2 black chicks are 5 weeks + 2 days. Named Tiger and Zebra.
Thought we were getting Plymouth Barred Rocks, but they clearly are not.
Breeder was also selling “Red Rock Cross” so I assume that’s what they are. I understand that to be Black Sex Linked (aka Black Star).
If I am correct that means...
Chick is 5 weeks + 2 days. “Her” name is Bea.
No great side angle photo but hopefully there images are helpful. I realize the one photo is clearly of another bird but it shows Bea’s behind so I included it.
Thanks for your insights!
Realized the 2 chicks we thought were Plymouth Barred Rocks and actually Black Sex Links! My 4 year old already named them Tiger and Zebra and we will keep the names even though they won’t have stripes.
Chicks are 2 weeks + 5 days old.
Thought we had:
1 x Columbian Rock Cross
2 x Rhode Island Red (possibly Red Sussex Cross)
2 x Plymouth Barred Rock
Now I realize that there are no stripes and no head spots so it is likely the other option from the mix sold which was “Red Rock Cross” - I...
We are new to this And yes we’ve seen suppliers of chicks and coop building materials sold out. We had been thinking about it for a few years (but someone was kindly bringing us free eggs!), so it is just recently that we acted on our intentions. I think many people are spending extra time at...
Oh the coop got bigger, and so did the run. Chicks are feathering out and having daily outside visits. Planning their move to the coop and reading up on happy transitions to the outside world!
Thanks for the tips! I appreciate the herbal comment. I am a herbalist myself (for humans) so I will read your other articles for chicken specific herbal tips.
The only photo so far on all of them is under the red heat lamp. Got 2 Plymouth Barred Rocks, 2 Rhode Island Reds, and 1 Columbian Rock Cross. The plan for the extended daytime run keeps getting bigger and bigger.
5 happy chicks in the brooder - 2 Rhode Island Reds, 2 Plymouth Barred Rocks, and 1 Columbian Rock Cross.....and the plan for the run just got larger (again x 3)
Thank You! Very helpful. Watching my new chicks (they are 6 days old and we got them today) so I appreciate knowing how to interpret their behaviour. Did some adjustments and they seem happy now.
