Ten days in and momma and chick continue to do well.
You were right, @Lady of McCamley ... little Peewee was unable to make it back up the ramp on that first night. I had piled a bunch of bedding under the ramp so it was less a "walking up the plank" kind of deal and more like walking up this...
Thanks so much for your taking the time to post your kind, gracious, and full-of-wisdom post, @Lady of McCamley. All of this is new to me, and so I'm definitely flying by the seat of my pants!
When I opened the coop up this morning, I was obviously curious to see if any new chicks had hatched...
I have a small flock of White Leghorns - one rooster and three hens. One of the hens went broody ~3 weeks ago. I've let her do her thing (bless her heart... sitting on a nest for three weeks must be crazy hard!). Anyway, a week ago, during one of her infrequent escapades out into the yard, I...
Thanks for the advice, guys.
Today, while she was taking her daily break I took the opportunity to select three eggs from her clutch, walk them inside the house and back to a dark room, and again try candling.
These are white eggs (White Leghorn) and one had a shell which was simply too opaque...
First time broody here (both her and me). I decided to let her (and nature) take its course. Bless her heart. She has worked so hard sitting on that nest! Only coming off once a day for a little break, then back to it.
By my reckoning, it's been close to 28 days. It's hard to pin down...
Thanks, guys. It's encouraging to hear that, should things come together well, new chicks could be introduced and integrated within the flock by their momma.
At this point I'll ride it out and see what happens. Fingers crossed that things go well!
I've raised a very small flock of White Leghorns for four years now. Presently I have three hens and a rooster. They live in a 4x6 coop with six nest boxes. They don't have a run, per se, but I have two connected 168' lengths of Premier One electric fencing that encloses their domain. So...
So sorry to hear of Cinder's and Rosa's passing. Their's was a wonderful story.
We too often think things like happiness, sadness, joy, exuberance, fear, and love are exclusive to us humans. And yet animals feel those things too. And those of us who keep chickens get to see it every day...
So, you order up this small flock of chicks, imagining the eggs and the entertainment and tiny bit of food independence that they represent. The box comes in the mail, thrumming with life. And from the first moments back home, dipping little beaks in water and carefully placing those little...
One of my White Leghorn hens had a growth suddenly appear on her foot, right at her ankle. Just appeared a day or so ago.
She's 27 months old and otherwise seems fine. She's her normal, happy self. Lots of energy. No weight change. It does not seem to be causing her any discomfort - she's...
The fascia boards are just to provide some structure and a point on the outside at which to afix the metal roof. At that level on the inside, there's just the last few inches of open space before the ceiling insulation material (a material called LP Tech Shield Roof Sheathing). When I bought...
Thanks for the replies, guys. Y'all have given me some things to think about.
First off, I'm in Northern Virginia (and I've updated my profile to reflect that). With our winters we get a fair number of nights down into the 20's (Fahrenheit), with a smaller number down into the teens, and just...
First time chicken owner here. I have a small backyard flock of six white leghorns, sixteen weeks old. Five girls and a rooster. They're doing just fine... as happy and healthy as can be.
But as we head into fall and its cooler temps, I'm wondering how exactly to manage the balance between...
Thanks, guys. I've opened up the nest boxes and put bedding in them... and enjoyed the posse curiously exploring the new addition to their digs.
Looking forward to eggs in a few weeks!
First time chicken keeper here (but loving it!). I have a small flock of six white leghorns, five pullets and a single rooster. They are 15 weeks old and just as happy and healthy as can be. They are a joy to watch!
My coop has six external nest boxes. Before moving the chicks out into the...
Hello, all. I suppose a first post ought to go here.
I'm near Warrenton, about forty miles due west of Washington, D.C. The wife and I are lucky to have several acres - around 3 acres cleared, and another couple in woods. I've been interested in raising chickens for a long time (I still have...
