Deadly Mad Chicken Massacre ? or disease ?

Thanks everyone. I do know that I have a few spots - particularly one in the coop above the window fan that I had not had a chance to secure. We never had issues before - but as I mentioned, my son-in-law was in town and he heard very distinct Raccoon sounds at my in-laws 3 houses up the street...

Deadly Mad Chicken Massacre ? or disease ?

All - apologies is there is a thread on this, but I am too traumatized to even look. I was on vacation and had folks stop by each day to check on the chickens - water, food, and collect eggs. Yesterday I looked on the chickenCam and saw a chicken (partially in frame) that wasn't moving. I...

URGENT - Chicken with Swollen butt - have her in bath now

Thanks Eggcessive! I may get a needle and instructions from the vet to help my 3rd hen. Appreciate all your comments. It is so comforting to have this community to consult. It is so stressful to have a sick hen. Any information is consoling. (huggs) Ginger

URGENT - Chicken with Swollen butt - have her in bath now

UPDATE - since this is my favorite chicken, I am biting the bullet and going to the vet. She is also my prize hen - well, if i entered her. She has the biggest comb in all the land :-) See photo. Just discovered one more chicken that is swollen, so good to to find out what it is since 3 of my...

URGENT - Chicken with Swollen butt - have her in bath now

Will post pictures of my new problem hen shortly. But it looks like I may need to try to drain her. She is no where near as swollen as our gal we put down today, so maybe catching this in time? The best graphics I found for doing this is...

URGENT - Chicken with Swollen butt - have her in bath now

Well, we euthanized our hen today. Sad, but she lived a good life. But this morning I noticed another Hen - our favorite - with a very poopy butt . I brought her in and washed her up. I don't see any signs of flystrike - but I do see the beginnings of what could be the swelling in the abdomen...

URGENT - Chicken with Swollen butt - have her in bath now

Thanks everyone. I think the abdomen is the worse issue here. She does not seem to be doing well. Not moving well or standing. Still excreting that yellow stuff. I am debating euthanizing her. But will wait and see how she is doing in the morning.

URGENT - Chicken with Swollen butt - have her in bath now

Thank you coach723 for they reply. This definitely looks like what she has. I have done the epsom salt soak, sprayed with Povidone Iodine (betadine) and picked out as many worms as I could and slathered with Neosporin. Gave her Poultry NutriDrench and some water. She is resting. But wow - her...

URGENT - Chicken with Swollen butt - have her in bath now

Noticed my hen (Isa Brown ~30 months old), she didn't get back into the coop one night and I found her in the run just sitting on the ground this morning. Her butt is super swollen - and very firm to the touch and she isn't flexing her feet (just cramped up - see photo). I am soaking her in...

    ALT to grandpa treadle feeder

I have found a great alternative to Grandpa's treadle feeder, and it is made by a small company here in Maryland. The Rent-a-Coop Treadle feeder is very similar in operation. Given I have had to upgrade my feeder quickly as we are fighting a nasty Rat problem, I couldn't wait for the Grandpa...

Three chicks dead within few hours

Chicks are fine - then all of a sudden I see one away from flock acting lethargic, breathing heavy. Soon after, they are on their back and convulsing before dying just seconds later. Bought at TSC about 5 weeks ago. It was a mix of Wyandotte’s and Americanas. I had 7 now have 4. Should o...

    Losing weight even after dewormer

She has had 3 doses of the dewormer (1.0ml). Have been making wet mash with yogurt. Initially she loved it - ate whole plate Friday night. But now she is not interested.

    Losing weight even after dewormer

Haven’t done the scrambled eggs yet. But thinking it is worth a try. She was comfortable tonight after getting the dewormer dose - but just been hanging with me on the couch and not eating. She seems comfortable but still not eating 🙁

    Losing weight even after dewormer

UPDATE: Saturday morning she weighed in at 3lbs 8 oz. So a gain of 3oz probably from liking the chick food with yogurt. But that is the end of the good news. She wasn't interested in food Saturday night or Sunday morning. This afternoon I saw the first signs of worms in her poop. Thinks...

    Losing weight even after dewormer

Thanks for your reply! I have not seen any signs of worms. Just the weird head shaking, weight loss, and her behavior of isolating from the flock and sleeping. will keep prepping food she will eat. Update - she cleaned the late of Chick food mixed with yogurt.

    Losing weight even after dewormer

I noticed one of my Isa Browns isolating herself in the corner of the run, sleeping a lot, and shaking her head. On Monday (Feb 1) I brought her inside to separate her from the flock and started her on Zfend A (it is what I had on hand) along with electrolytes both mixed with her water. On...

Do I need a chicken door between Coop and Run?

That is a good point. Fortunately the opening isn't drafty and opens on the opposite side from prevailing winds. And we have a scrap of the metal roof attached to the outside like an awning (see photo). So bring on the snow, we should be good

Do I need a chicken door between Coop and Run?

Thanks everyone! I feel kinda silly running out at sunrise to put that low-tech brick and board up. The only thing it does it keep the chickens in. A predator could totally get in IF my run wasn't secure. Given I have gone 4+ months with no issues, I think I pretty safe to not invest in an...
