What do you use to tell your chickens apart?

Wow that is unique. Curious to hear any additional details you may have.

do you enjoy having a rooster or regret it?

In defense of the roosters, I started a bachelor coop this year. I had to cull quite a few last year for aggression, I was hoping to see better attitudes. So far without the hens, there hasn't been any aggression only respectful wariness. They seem to be getting along surprisingly well and the...

What do you use to tell your chickens apart?

My original flock of girls I know them all just by sight. Got a whole lot more chickens and with the newer ones, can't tell one Delaware from another and the black Ameraucana looks really close to that black EE pullet. It's definitely a side effect of chicken math. 😂

What do you use to tell your chickens apart?

I use different colored zip ties if I need to keep track of who someone is. I have it written down what color means what, because the next year I know I won't remember what the blue zip tie on the black Ameraucana hen signifies. I don't like putting zip ties on newly hatched chicks...

do you enjoy having a rooster or regret it?

I have definite mixed feelings about my roosters. On the one hand I need them to hatch chicks, but were it not for that, there wouldn't be any roosters here. Still waiting to get a roo that is (a) one I actually want to sire chicks (b) gentle with the hens and (c) not an asshat to me and the...

how long can chickens be separated without forgetting each other

As far as how long a until they decide someone is new and needs attacked, seems to depend on the group or individual chicken. I've had broody hens separated for 2 weeks, go right back into their main flock with no problem. I had a hen separated for a week from her flock and poor gal lost most...

    🍁 September Hatch-a-Long 🍁

I have 12 shipped Ameraucana eggs in the incubator this is day 6. I just pulled them out tonight to get a first look at the air cells. Quite a few are saddled and one is completely detached I think. Any tilting moves it like an air bubble on a level. 4 aren't viable, one may have quit already...

    🍃August Hatch-a-Long🍃

I need to update on my 2 august hatches. The first batch of shipped eggs, I only had one chick hatch. I made so many mistakes I'm sure I was lucky to have that one. Out of the 12 only 4 made it to lockdown, one little guy hatched out all on his own. I named him Lucky, this chick is saucy and...

    🍃August Hatch-a-Long🍃

This is my next batch of shipped eggs. Day 18 and when I candled them this morning, I saw this. Could this possibly be a pip this early?? I’m hoping I didn’t crack or damage it while handling but I candled yesterday, since I’m keeping a close eye on the air cells and I’m sure I would have...

    🍃August Hatch-a-Long🍃

I've got one external pip and 3 cheepers and tappers. :celebrate I couldn't stand it and when I added a little of water, I put each one to my ear. Only one was quiet and there's still plenty of time yet.

    🍃August Hatch-a-Long🍃

Day 20 with the 4 eggs left from my shipped batch. I heard chirping :wee So at least one of the 4 is still alive. Nothing external yet and chirping isn't hatched but I'm hopeful :D

    🍃August Hatch-a-Long🍃

I have my other batch of eggs in a separate incubator at 30%. That seems to keep them on track air cell wise. I had to stop weighing them because it was making me nuts and 2nd guessing everything. Once I could see the air cells, it was easier to judge whether to increase or drop the humidity...

    🍃August Hatch-a-Long🍃

Would you run it with no water, as I have the last 2 days? Humidity with no water is avg 20%. Without getting into the assisted hatching good/bad debate. I've already decided I'm an assister if I see a need. I'm a nurse and have assisted goats, cats and horses over the years. Assisting chicks...

    🍃August Hatch-a-Long🍃

Question for the hatching guru's about humidity. First batch down to 4 out of 12, day 19. Candled this morning all still moving, taking up most of the shell. Air cells are still a bit small but looking much closer to the right size. I didn't lock down on day 18 because they looked way too...

    🍃August Hatch-a-Long🍃

Day 14 for this batch, can someone tell me if the air cells are the right size? Or at least close. It’s the dark green line. I’ve been keeping the humidity at 40-45%.

These are 2 that I think quit later in development. I just want to make sure before I toss. This group is at day 16

    🍃August Hatch-a-Long🍃

I did not know that. So possibly the dead eggs are messing with the temperature regulation? This is my first time candling, I've been afraid to toss any in case I'm wrong, also they're maran eggs which doesn't help although I've been having good results with the candling system I built. I can...

    🍃August Hatch-a-Long🍃

I read somewhere on here that as chicks grow, they can create heat of their own while incubating. Since yesterday I'v been getting climbing temps after being rock solid for better than 10 days. Out of 27 eggs I have 15 growing, and seeing movement. I'm hoping it's growing chicks because...
