Personally I have been amazed at the awesome mamas my broody hens are, when I give them hatchlings. I have a small flock of 8, and ordering hatchlings is the easiest way to keep the numbers stable, and have a variety of breeds (all docile). As you can’t order just one, I usually get four then...
Do be careful with the PT Alpine if you are around any water. It is listed as an acute and chronic hazard to aquatic life. We have a lot of springs around here, so can't use it - I've resorted to the stinky bag method (Catchmaster). Again beware the water - this time, not to get any on you when...
I know I know - it's a roo!!! Just holding out the weensiest bit of hope. Of the FBCM babies one of our girls fostered, I was hoping these three were all girls. They all looked identical until about a week ago - when the crest and wattles showed up. They are 8 1/2 weeks old. Is there any chance...
RIRs (from what I've seen) are coppery babies - your guys are yellow. My lavender orpington stands her ground against the EEggers and others - I generally went for all laid-back breeds, but pecking order happens! Queenie (my lavorp) is the biggest girl. She is placid, but nobody messes with her.
We have a broody girl, and ordered three babies for her that will arrive in a couple of days. I have read plenty of posts about sneaking them under her wing at night - and several advising daytime, as whether she will or won't accept the chicks is pretty much the same either way. My preference...
Thanks for all the advice. I added probiotics and some zinc to warm oatmeal/yogurt, upped their protein with mealworms, sterilized everything, and put vitamins/electrolytes in their water. I also covered everything with neosporin (which didn't make me overly popular in the run). Everyone is...
Thank you for all this information - heading out to apply neosporin and add electrolytes right now.
Question: can I administer the vaccine to my whole flock, including infected chickens? They are all past the 'pre-laying' stage. In addition, should their eggs be discarded for a period of time...
Hello - our little flock of 7-month-old girls has been thriving, and laying well (save one Buff Orp who is still in a tween stage). I just got home after being gone a week, and some of my girls have developed black, wart-like bumps on their faces. I am attaching pics of my EEgger Fortuna, and...
I can’t decide what my favorite thing about these pictures is - the adorable jumping fairy? the happy pup observing the action?? or the herd of chickens marching en masse??? Going with ‘all of the above’!!! I think daily posts of your chunnel activity would soothe the ruffliest of feathers in...
Thank you for your help - she is a major eating machine - and seems to keep up the the rest of the girls. Maybe she will just be a mini Orp! Question: do bantam hens lay smaller eggs? (And for their sakes - I hope so!)
This is our wee little Buff Orpington Dolly Parton. She was probably the largest chick when they arrived (two days old) - and she eats like a complete champ - but she is markedly smaller than her sisters (Easter Eggers - Lavendar Orp - Cream Legbar - Cuckoo Maran). She still seems to have a bit...
