    Built a New Coop

M These were pictures I had taken on the last day of building. I have always like vinyl floors at the bottom of the coop, it makes cleaning shavings/straw/etc out very easy and I can clean it down good. It connects to the coop with a 10 inch “tunnel” I built out of 2x3s. (Nesting boxes were...

    Built a New Coop

Built this new coop myself and i’m so proud! It was time for a whole new one and moved to a new area, and quarantine was a good time to get it all done. It’ll fit my 12 hens and 1 roo. They free range during the day when I am home and on the premises (which I almost always am), and if I am not...

Northern Fowl Mites/Red Mites are Ticking Me Off

I’m sorry, it is an annoying problem especially when you’ve tried everything. I had a similar problem and bought First Saturday Lime and it has definitely been taking care of the nasty mites. Its a first of its kind lime that controls pests/odor but its also edible for the chickens and all other...

    Silver laced Wyandotte gender?

It looks like you have all hens to me!! If you’re still worried about gender, I sex my silver laced wyandottes by the length of the wing (hens wings will be the length of their bodies, roosters wings will be visibly shorter).

    Silver Laced Wyandotte Fever

This years hatch gave me 7 pure silver laced wyandotte pullets and I can’t get over how fun and sweet this breed is from the time they’re little. They’re enjoying the nice weather today and watching me do farm work, its hard to get anything done with littles who want treats climbing all over...

    Rooster Saved My Whole Flock

That whole flock has since passed away but if i’m not wrong, my parents still have around 10 Silver Laced Wyandottes who I believe to be Nathan’s grandkids!

    Rooster Saved My Whole Flock

Roosters are great for the flock. And minks are SO sneaky, i’m glad you caught up to it. When I was little I lived on a farm, and my friends and I had a campout on my sisters birthday and we awoke to probably 10 chickens laying on the ground twitching. A mink or weasel had come in the night and...

    Rooster Saved My Whole Flock

It definitely sounds like an urban legend but I really chalk it up to how serious he took his job. He was very loved and knew his humans, and i’m sure he valued his hens even more. He was around 10 lbs, a little taller than my other two roos who were a Partridge Wyandotte and Brahma. I had seen...

    Rooster Saved My Whole Flock

Oh my gosh that is so traumatizing i’m sorry for your loss. Owls are so scary. The chickens are lucky to have you take good care of them, I have neighbors down the road who treat their chickens like they’re disposable.

If I Only Had a Brain...

If it makes you feel better... I‘ve locked myself in my chicken coop about 3 times in the past year. I’ve had chickens for 22 years, I think i’m losing my marbles!! And I installed another motion activated light- with the sensor facing the tree and did not realize until 2 months later. Woof.

    Rooster Saved My Whole Flock

I wish I had a digital photo of my favorite rooster Nathan, but this was before the time of iPhones. He was a silver laced Wyandotte who was kind to me, the hens, and all the little kids who always wanted to pet him. I was very lucky. I had three roos at that time, and around 30 hens. Nathan was...

Official BYC Poll: The Worst Predator

I live on a farm and have had every predator on the list, and if you’re new- motion activated lights on the coop work wonders. Bury hardware cloth around the coop/run perimeter, secure everything with locks, and fill in all gaps. Chicken wire is a no. Raccoons are the worst, they’re crafty...

chicks too hot/cold? Unsure of age

22 years of chicken life and i’d just say they’re a little too hot. They huddle together for comfort sometimes, despite the temperature. But those red bulbs get far hotter than what the thermometer says in my experience. If you can raise it a few more inches then I definitely would.

    Chick grit

22 years of poultry life and I would say (just my opinion and experience) that they don’t need grit for some scrambled eggs, its soft enough. DuMor chick grit should be available at your local farm supply or you can get it online (I think scratchandpeck feed has some too), but only give it to...

UrbanMike's No Idea What I'm Doing Coop & Run

22 years of poultry life and i’d say that coop looks amazing. Predators are your biggest enemy. I would dig a 6 inch trench around their run and insert hardware cloth 3 feet high, as this will help keep out the digging predators (raccoons, coyotes, possums, dogs, martens, etc). Chicken wire...

    Covid-panic-induced chicken keeping?

Farm kids with 22 years of poultry life and I see what your saying! On my weekly drop in to TSC I almost see no chicks their brooders. On one hand, I pray to God that all of those babies are going to good homes who will care for them, do their research, invest in them, and enjoy chickens for all...

how many of you let your chickens free range...and have a dog??

I’ve been a farm kid for 22 years, and we have many dogs! I would say that if this is your first flock, set the coop up outside and let the dog sniff around the coop and look inside before the chickens go into it so he can get a sense of whats going on in there (or curiosity will be...

    Need help with chick

Farm kid here, 22 years of “chickening” as well. I’ve had a chicken with poor eyesight before, who lived a fine life. However, could this be Mareks disease? I only say this because i’ve lost a cockerel to that virus, a keynote is the loss of weight and poor eyesight (gray iris) and poor...
