For what it’s worth, one of my hens (a salmon Faverolle) layed pink eggs and as a pullet her eggs had heavy white speckles like that. As she aged the speckles became fewer, but her eggs always had speckles.
It may have been mentioned, but if you put a poop board on the floor and your roosts some distance above it, the poop will not always fall straight down and you may end up with poop outside the collection tray.
Bahaha! By the title I thought this was a way to introduce new breeds to myself, intended to help BYC’ers have fun and still maintain healthy chicken acquisition rates and flock sizes.
Great article, though!
Bought these at WilCo on April 20 and I *think* they were 4-5 days old but for the first several weeks they were noticeably bigger and older acting than the other chicks, despite being the only bantams.
At any rate, I think they are around 8 weeks old.
One definitely acted like a rooster In...
I know next to nothing about either breed but was curious. I‘ve had several Wyandottes of most colors tho and that’s a strange mix. I agree-she’s beautiful. They both are!
We had an interesting situation earlier this month and maybe it can help someone else.
Clementine on the right
We started our flock two years ago raising 8 chicks by hand. Someone started laying fart eggs early this spring once every week or two and we eventually narrowed it down to...
Hi, some time has gone by, I hope you’re mite/lice problem is gone. I just read last night that DE can be effective against grain mites, which I may be dealing with right now. Also read, and after testing for one night it seemed to work, rubbing alcohol works to spray inside on furniture etc...
Thank you for this!!! Have a mite situation going on and cleaned the coop today. Despite a hot shower and immediately washing my clothes I’ve been awake since 3 from itching, trying to figure out what I’m dealing with and how to keep it out if my house. Fingers crossed for no more night time...
I bought this chick at Wilco sexed as a pullet, but at almost 4 weeks old this Barred Rock is looking like a roo to me. Acting like one too, always the first to investigate new things and eyeball visitors. What do you think??
I regularly dust DE under bedding and litter in my coop, nest boxes, poop tray etc. Haven’t made a habit of putting it on the hens but have mixed a bit in their dust bath area. It helps keep things clean and pests under control but isn’t a substitute for regular cleaning.
However, now I’m...
Exactly! Two of these chicks are bantam Mille Fleur about 5 days old, while the others are all 2 or 4 days old. I thought the tiny ones wouldn’t stand out but she noticed. She seemed to accept the youngest chicks who most resembled her. Trouble started when I pushed her to take more. Lesson...
That is excellent advice and I appreciate your reply. I have never even considered actually getting eggs, it seems like something for the pros. But maybe I just will next time!
As far as these chicks go, I kept them inside for the rest of the day and she didn’t return to the nest. By dusk she...
I don’t know if I’ve meddled too much, worked too fast or if the situation can be corrected but I need advice for grafting our Blue Wyandotte to accept feed store chicks.
Last year she went solid broody for three weeks and I successfully gave her three feed store chicks. It wasn’t the easiest...
