Need to rehome two male ducks

I would, but I don’t have anywhere else to keep them that is safe. We would consider culling them and putting them in the freezer, but we have zero experience with it. Just deer.

Need to rehome two male ducks

Earlier this spring my wife and my daughter wanted ducks. I didn’t. I was happy with the chickens. So we compromised and got ducks….yeah. Anyhow, we got four and 3 of the 4 turned out to be male. They’re older now and the three males will NOT let the female be! They’re constantly mounting her...

Cock of the walk or another hen?

Here are some more recent pics. I just took them today. He’ll come up to me, eat out of my hand and lets me pet him.

Cock of the walk or another hen?

I’m going to go over how they should interact with him as he gets older soon. We’ve had chickens before...just not this breed or this many at one time.

Cock of the walk or another hen?

I’m cool with that. Ever since I noticed the differences I’ve been telling my daughters to love on that one a lot...make sure he likes/trusts them and won’t jump them! One cockerel for 11 hens is cool. Should help protect the girls to! He also has a little bit of shiny green coming into his back...

Cock of the walk or another hen?

So...approximately two months ago I bought a dozen leghorn pullets from TSC. All look pretty much the same except this one. This pic was taken last week and now “he” has some longer “rooster gills” as I call them on the lower sides. All the other hens combs are more white/pink while this one is...

When to move outside? (Central Texas)

Well, night one was a success! I did go out there a few times before I went to bed to make sure they were ok. Instead of using the roosting bars though they kept huddled together on the ground but they are still young. They'll figure it out. Thanks for y'alls input!

When to move outside? (Central Texas)

Ok! Well they’re all set up for the night! We’ll see how it goes. Thanks everyone!

    Space Efficient Roost Layout

Location updated aart! Yeah...I’m starting to think it’s a little TOO open. Not sure they’ll have any real protection from the rain. Might cover the lower fence sections and just leave the roof vents and the front open.

Tractor Supply - Curb Side Pickup?

    Space Efficient Roost Layout

Here are a few better pictures of what I did. My whole thing was built out of re-purposed wood. I think the bars are 2x4's that were cut in half.

    Space Efficient Roost Layout

Mine is set 4ft off the ground so I'm sure they could just fly up there. I'm not even 100% sure it's enough room for all 12 of them. Should be I'd think. Time will tell there. At the moment there is a ladder I built and today I went to check on them and I actually saw a few of them...

    Our Coop

Dang...I was proud of mine but this....this is a masterpiece! Well done!

    Space Efficient Roost Layout

My coop is quite a bit smaller than yours will be at 6x7 (still a work in progress too) but I did a corner roost thing. Not the best picture, but I wanted to make it to where I could still get in there easily to clean/feed/repair/whatever. I did two longer ones from the center of one wall to...

When to move outside? (Central Texas)

Howdy all. Just a quick question. I've searched and found lots of stuff for other areas but none for around here! Anyhow I've got 12 leghorn pullets approx 5-6 weeks old and they're getting pretty cramped in the dog crate I have them in at night. On top of that the heat lamp burned out last...

    Repurposed lumber coop

The dogs will protect them from the ground predators in the fenced in back yard (they have no interest in the chickens and have been raised with birds when younger)....so only thing I really have to worry about is aerial predators. I'm hoping the dogs will deter that as well.

    Howdy All!

I put paving stones around the base on the outside. I've discovered in the past that that deters diggers. Only thing I'm worried about possibly digging in from inside the back yard is my dogs but they show little to no interest in the chickens. I haven't put the pavers along the outside fence...

    Repurposed lumber coop

North side is the “solid” wall. I was thinking about doing the south side too. Then it would just be the roof vents, rear and front.

    Repurposed lumber coop

Yeah. I was definitely going to do that in the winter. I think in these summers though they’ll be good. I was thinking of clipping the flight feathers to keep them in the back yard as well.

    Repurposed lumber coop

Hey all. So my kids have been bugging me for years on getting more chickens but my excuse was always “we don’t have a coop” which wasn’t entirely true. I had just disassembled the old one and put it in a pile behind the storage building on our land. So I forced my hand about a month ago and...
