Not sure what to do/ chicken not molting but losing feathers

I have a 2 year old Sapphire Gem hen. Last spring/summer she started to pull off her feathers in the vent area then progressed to the breast area. I took her to my Vet who has avian experience. He looked her over and thought she may have mites, but couldn't see any crawling around in the vent...

    Chickens laying soft shell eggs

I have four 18 month old Sapphire Gems. Up until the beginning of summer all were laying nice large eggs. Over the summer two of them started to lay soft shell eggs. I tried several things like changing the brand of layer crumbles I use, as well as making sure they have oyster shells available...

Use of Liquid band aid for foot injuries

I have a 15 month old Sapphire Gem hen that had a bumble foot injury that was causing her to limp. I took her to a Vet in town who has avian experience. He put her under and removed the infected area. Six weeks later, she has a nice scab on the affected area that I wrap with that sticky tape to...

    Hen with foot injury

I have a 2 year old Silver Laced Wyandotte that injured her foot this morning. Looks like it got hung up on something. The injury involves the little toe on the back of the right foot. She managed to tear off the toe nail. Blood drops everywhere. We cleaned it up, applied antiseptics and...

Older hen with runny/ clear poop

Update: I brought her in the last night. I gave her some of the Sav-A-chick electrolyte water to drink. She drank it continuously, and her poop was watery. I eventually removed it. She also has liquid coming out of her mouth too. She eats the Flock Raiser food I give her. Her poop is still...

    Can stress cause runny poop?

I have a 4 year old Easter Egger who always seems to have digestive issues. The rest of the flock seems to be fine. This hen has not laid eggs for almost a year, and maybe retired. She is also at the bottom of the pecking order. I was wondering if this stress can cause digestive issues in some...

    Chicken with runny stool

You could also try to add probiotics to her water. I have a 4 year old Easter Egger who had watery poop. It was suggested on this Forum to add probiotics to her water and cut out the treats. I did cut out the treats and added the SavAChic powdered probiotics to the water. That was 6 days ago...

    Older hen with watery poop

I have a 4 year old Easter Egger who is the only one in my flock of 5 that has this issue. She seems to have this issue every year. I had the whole flock on medicated layer crumbles for two weeks. The others have normal poop, but she still has it. Is there anything I can feed them or not feed...

What to feed hens that are currently not laying due to molting, shorter days etc.

I was wondering what to feed your laying hens during the winter months when they are not laying due to molting, cold weather and shorter days? I feed mine a 18% protein layer crumble. Only one of my five hens is currently laying, so she needs the layer crumbles, but what about the others?

Grubbly oven roasted black fly grub food

I opened a Grubbly 5 lb. bag of oven roasted black fly grubs back in February of this year. Does anyone know how long these last once the bag is opened? I've stored it in a cool dry dark space with a clip on it to keep air out.

Hello all: I have four 10 week old chicks that are being fed a Start and Grow crumble feed. At this age, can I introduce them to other kinds of food like crickets, or lettuce leaves? I have a veggie garden. Any recommendations of other kinds of food I can give them for variety would be...

Overheated Chicks - Is this normal recovery or was I too late?

I have four new 3 week old chicks: an Easter Egger, a Saphire Gem, and 2 Silver Laced Wayandottes. They are starting to get feathers on their bodies. During the day I put them outside in a 5' X 4" secured pen with a 5' X 9' covered run. Our day time temps here in SW Utah is in the mid-90's...

Update on 2 year old Easter Egger hen laying eggs with no shell

Back on April 29th I posted a thread about my 2 year old Easter Egger laying soft eggs with no shell. She did have access to crushed oyster shell on the side. I was advised to increase the calcium, so I switched the 3 hen flock to a layer crumble. Well, it worked and she is back to laying her...

Easter Egger hen laying soft eggs

I feed my girls Purina Flock Raiser on a regular basis. I have not introduced any new birds to my flock. You are correct...Purina medicated start and grow helps prevent Coccidiosis, not cure it. I have not dewormed my flock yet.

Easter Egger hen laying soft eggs

Well, by soft I mean no shell, just the opaque membrane that is rubbery to the touch.
