    Possible egg oddity

I think it was the little silkie but not sure. Haven't seen one since although somebody had a big expulsion of wormy poo. I may need to worm the recent new girls from another flock.

    Possible egg oddity

Just looked up lash egg and it isn't like that at all. I think it may belong to one of the bantams, a silkie, as that is where she sits in roost most times. thanks for your info.

    Possible egg oddity

Found this odd looking item this am while cleaning out the night's produce under the roosts. I'm thinking it is a failed egg. Anyone else ever see anything like this?

    Our newest adventure, EMU's!

Love that you have more than one great bird! What an awesome farm habitat you must have and yes, I also got an emu after wishing and not prepped. Esmerelda is quite docile and 4 or so yrs old, she is called tame but can do a crazy emu in a Heart beat. They aren’t domesticated at all really, just...

New to Emus!!! Can they protect chickens against predators?

The previous keeper of Esmerelda said that she killed a raccoon, the commonest predator here in the panhandle. Esmeralda is docile, and easily managed. She is also a descendant of velociraptors, as you can tell by the toes. Being very aware is a good thing and I agree about children. They don’t...

Comment by 'Panamom' in article 'Insulating The Chicken Coop for Winter'

Although I said like i find it very sad everytime a bird dies, especially the preventable ones. They are family members. I know you know this but people outside of my very small circle don't understand this. I love my birds. And the ducks, who can be a bit harder to cuddle or love.

I have insulated the drafts as we are getting some really cold temps but it will heat up again. I live in FL, and low temps typically are rare. Wifi with the temp! Awesome!

    young emu poop

My emu is 4.5 and I have been her mom for a short while (3 mos). Her poop has always been mushy and she refused any grains or veggies. She was also very under weight. She has put on weight is not lethargic any more and is eating grains and veggies. I found a poo yesterday that could double for...

    Duckling hen hatch

I have 4 peking females and one male and I may have fertilized eggs next spring. I have seen my female ducks lay willy nilly and never even sit on eggs. So I suppose they need an incubator. I don't have one, however I have a batch of hens, many of the broody breed. Can I slip a possibly...

I have dirt floors with some litter. Don't compost it as I collect the poo and save it. But I could. I also have an Emu who doesn't or hasn't pooed in the coop yet. She does go in during the day but sleeps outside at night.

Love the idea of using old feed bags. I use them for a lot of things, garbage, storing chicken poop, and yes, stopping drafts. I live in Florida so it isn't crucial to have it so insulated, however i live in northern Florida and we get some hard freezes. This was a great article. Nice to remind me.
