Hello I have a chicken who is very sick and I don’t know what it is. Her name is Blackbird and we just noticed weird behavior a day or two ago, but we don’t really know how long it has been going on. She is standing upright with her tail at the ground and seems unable to stand normally. She...
Can’t really tell, but they could be buff orpingtons. It’s a really common breed that seems like the most likely option. But like Pork Pie said, give it a couple weeks.
I would suggest blocking it off. Those areas collect predators like rats and snakes that will be waiting to get one of your ducks that wander under there. Maybe you could set up a little canopy for some shade for the ducks instead.
It could be a raccoon. A lot of times they snap the necks of all the birds they can then run off with a couple. They are really smart and sneaky when it comes to breaking in coops.
It’s normal for hens to do that. Also, making the bars the same height might make it better, but often regardless of the height they will fight for the best spot.
In this year, I’ve gone from 5 chickens to 7 chickens, so I think it’s time I installed a permanent winter proof run. My coop started as just the main area, then the roost was built, then the nesting box, then the A-frame. As a result, the coop is not so pretty with weird add-ons. The A-frame...
Mine do this constantly in the morning before they are let out. However during the winter, they get used to being in the coop all the time and stop doing it, so I think once yours get used to being in the run, they will stop.
You can buy little chicken toys for them, or make them at home, then fill them with treats. It also helps to have areas where Karen can hide from the others and/or perches where she is out of reach.
Big news! My pullet Pandora laid her first egg today! She laid it in the nesting box, so I’m glad she figured that out. Here’s a pic of her with her first egg!
A great way to comfort the chick is to hang a feather duster so the chick can snuggle underneath it. It feels just like being under mama’s comfy belly.
