I know I’m a little late to this conversation but I raise bobwhite quail as a business and 6 feet is about perfect. You either want less than 2 feet, or more than 6 feet. Less the 2 prevents them from building up vertical speed, and 6 or more allows them to slow down or change course before...
Hello all,
I am getting muscovy ducks next year and had a few questions
1) how many muscovies would fit into an 8x16 duck house if they free ranged during the day
2) do they need water inside the house if I lock them up at night and let them out early in the morning
3)how many chicks can I...
Time for the rest of the story. I have 8 males currently living outside and 7 inside for breeding this winter. I have 5 females inside and 2 males but one of the males is super aggressive. I’m wondering if this is because I have 2 males for 5 females. If I need to change this, I will kick the...
As you can see by one of my pictures above, she is very skinny and feels fragile. She has been eating in her quarantine. Here are some pictures of the rest of the breeding group.
This happened the night before and I don’t have pictures of the original wound as I was focused on separating the bird. I will post the pictures I just took (the night after) below. This is a female bobwhite who was living with 4 other females and 2 males. Not sure how obvious it is, but the...
Wild bobwhites pair up for a whole season but domestic bobs will rarely stick with a partner for more than a few weeks before they start fighting with other pairs to get more females
The guy who gave the original eggs to me trains dogs with the quail he buys, but doesn’t need the eggs so i also get ~45 eggs a day from him in the springtime but I will need to start breeding over the winter for more breeding stock
I understand this but I need more birds before spring so I can scale up next year. I have a list of buyers who will need 1200 birds next year and 4 females are not going to get me the size of breeding stock that I need unless I start now. I do have a small group that are still living outdoors...
Most chickens can reach up close to their necks with their legs and scratch/backpedal until they get enough grip to flip over. Next time you notice this, maybe setup a time lapse and don’t help him. See what happens (check frequently but see what he does when you can’t help him up)
From my experience, the more you pay for an incubator, the longer it lasts. But for just 5 eggs almost anything will work. Also, it’s important to find out why she died so other quail don’t suffer the same fate
I have 10 bobwhite quail (6 male and 4 female) I know the ratios of male/female are messed up but they live outside in 4 foot grasses and aren’t breeding this time of year. That being said, I need chicks to increase my breeding stock and brought 3 female and 1 male inside a cage in an unheated...
I agree and I would never use this option first. This is a last resort I have only ever used in extreme cases with foxes in my area. This option is only if all else fails.
If your worried about your neighbors getting mad at you spraying or zapping their dog, a tack strip for carpet works very well for digging animals! You can place it directly under the fence and kind of bury it a little/ sprinkle loose dirt over it. When the dog begins to dig.... well take a look...
In my previous hatch of 20 remaining quail eggs, 19 made it and are doing well. However with the temperatures in my region rising, I can no longer store fertile eggs in my garage as they will be 80+ degrees throughout the day. However I was given a great condition vaccine fridge from a local...
I decided to partially open the eggs so the would still have to push themselves out. I had a mini humidifier and a spare heat lamp that I set up to do the operation and it went smoothly. I opened up some area around their beaks, but I found it interesting that even thought the shell was pipped...
I have 7 quail eggs in the incubator right now. All have externally pipped but that was 36 hours ago. I have seen progress in some, but very little. My humidity has not dropped below 65% and I lowered my incubator temperature to 99* (F). Should I think about helping them? What should I do?
