Thank you so much! I’m halfway through my first call duck hatch and will be referring back to this article. I love the photos and clear explanation. Can I please also double check when you stop turning the eggs if you’re checking internal pip from day 23?
Hi, we are also in the UK and I’ve noticed the same in our cockerel. Wondered how you got on and if the red skin went back to normal? Many thanks, Erin
Update: I was able to find a local vet to do a necropsy yesterday. Sadly, although evidence of coccidiosis, that was secondary as poor girl had very enlarged liver and spleen and inflamed intestines with ulceration. Suspected mareks and waiting to find out results :(
Also vet said birds are...
Thank you for your reply. Yes I treated the area with a product called bi-OO-cyst which is supposed to kill the oocysts and have kept the area as clean as possible. The birds haven't really had an opportunity to build up immunity since the original outbreak as they have to be kept indoors now...
Thank you for your reply. I received the eggs from a friend - the parents seem healthy and I'm unaware of any underlying health problems. We are in England and I haven't been able to see any coccidiosis vaccines available for backyard poultry. I'll look up about oregano oil - and interesting...

Hi, our very loved 6 month old hen died after a brief (as far as we know) illness. We noticed her with comb flopped over the last few weeks and more recently huddled with tail down and listless. We separated her and treated her for suspected impacted crop but sadly she passed away. I am a...
Glad to hear the rest of your flock all well and hope your new rescue ladies settle in to their retirement 😊 The rest of ours are all well. We had a hatch of all boys in May and are now growing up last month’s hatch with hopefully a few girls to add to our little flock~
Just read this whole thread as had a very loved young point of lay hen pass away today with very similar symptoms. We’re also in the UK (Hampshire). Very sorry to hear of Ginger’s passing - I was really hoping for a recovery :( Did you ever find out any more what was wrong? Thank you for...
Thank you all for your help. Was able to use a needle and syringe last night and gently inserted under the skin on back by wing (in a big air bubble and could see no veins). Was able to remove the air and chick looking much more like a chick! It’s looking well and eating/drinking this morning so...
