Thanks for mentioning about the calcium citrate and the dosage. I have a 2 year-old Cinnamon Queen who lays 5 days/week but recently started laying eggs in the run instead of the nestbox and now has not laid an egg for the past 4 days. When I'm out cleaning up the coop she comes up to me...
Whenever possible, I like to give updates on issues I've raised in the BYC forum. An avian vet arranged for fecal labs on the coral urate poop I was finding in the morning under the roosts of the coop. She tested for Cryptosporidium and Giardia - both parasites - and both came back negative. As...
Sorry for the delay. Thanks so much for your reply. The vet I spoke to is semi-retired and I send photos of things when they come up. He comes to my house once a year to do an overall flock check, but I'm going to see if I can travel to the vet hospital where he works on occasion. Would be good...
For the past week I've been finding some chicken poop in the coop under the roosts with coral urates (see photo). I've read up on this condition, including past posts here at BYC, and most seem to say this is normal and likely due to the shedding of the intestinal lining. Poop found during the...
To Mother of Chaos, I've already put up a board between the runs so to create a block in the sightline between feeders, and I placed one of their whole-grain plates behind the shrub outside. They were confused but so be it. I'm going to try this system out for a bit. I'll keep you posted!
I agree with TOMTE. We've gone through both deaths and flock integrations with newbies, and both have been difficult. Once one of them dies - regardless of their place in the pecking order or their laying status - the flock has to reorganize and it ain't easy.
That's an interesting idea - about the line of sight. There's 14' x 8' of run space - where the feeders are. The coop is "raised," so the small run is underneath it and the larger run is attached with an entry door from the small run. The feeding areas are separated only by the metal gate and...
Thanks for responding! We have only 6 hens. They have 2 large feeders in their runs for regular pellet food. I put out 2 plates with whole-grain layer food when they're out and about - I guess I could try 3 and see if that makes a difference. I appreciate your suggestion!
I'm having the same problem of a hen mounting another hen. My Cinnamon Queen sex-linked 1-year-old is mounting my Welsummer - also 1 year-old. It seems to happen around food, and mostly when I give them some additional layer food that's not in their regular feeder. The WS is at the bottom of the...
Ah! Thanks! Yes, that fits. I guess in researching this I've read several articles by people who say they've raised many Welsummers and find them to be the least skittish of all the breeds and also early layers. Appreciate your perspective.
Thanks for the feedback. Actually, I just started trying to hold her over the last several days to see if she was uncomfortable with me or just the other chickens. She doesn't struggle at all once I have her. My sense is she's, as you say, a late maturing pullet, but also, one who's the bottom...
My 29-week-old Welsummer, whom we raised from 2 weeks post-hatch, has not begun laying. I'm concerned because I've read Welsummers typically lay at about 20 weeks. She is eating, foraging, pooping normally. She was one of 4 chicks we began raising in a brooder - the other 3 (Wyandotte, Buff...
Thank you so much for looking at my photos! I'm grateful for your response. So, I'll soak her foot again in Epsom salts tomorrow. I've seen the tillys nest link as it is often cited, but I've never had bumblefoot in any of my hens before. Appreciated!
I was giving my 4-year old Barred Plymouth Rock a butt bath after several days of very rainy weather and noticed these lumps on her feet. She has had no issues with walking – no limping, etc., so I hadn’t noticed them. She eats, drinks, poops, forages, and lays normally. She squats to have me...
I ordered 4 chicks from our local feed store. I found out today that 2 of them would have to come early in mid-March, while the other 2 will arrive April 6. I know it takes time for pullets to be introduced to our other 4 full-grown hens, but when we get the 2 chicks in April, can they be placed...
So, I'm giving an update on my Light Brahma hen who is still separated from our flock, but we take her out each day to see the others, keeping them separated with a mesh fence. The vet we took her to a couple of weeks ago (not an avian expert) prescribed anti-inflammatory medicine Meloxicam...
