    Rooster or hen???

Yeah, the second pic shows some pretty long, pointy saddle feathers, and you can see them in the first pic after you notice them in the second. I vote rooster!

    Chicken’s Choice?

The“big” birds all already roost on the back roost in the silkie coop (there is are two ), and though the Silkies aren’t directly under them, I do worry about that. I will try setting the Silkies on the front roost.

    Is she a black australorp?

I think what I like about Meyer Hatchery is that they have a chart telling you what your extra chick was depending on the week you got it. I can’t take the suspense! :lau

    Chicken’s Choice?

It does, but they prefer to cuddle in a pile Against one wall. No clue why, since they have a low roost!

(unofficial BYC poll) how many chickens do you have?

I’ve only got 15, but I plan to get some meat chickens soon, and next spring I’m bringing home some turkeys!!! (Which I figure is close enough to count.) 😂. reading that over, I say “only 15” then remember the days when I thought 5 was a lot...

    Chicken’s Choice?

I know that size of coop is important. My 15 chickens free range all day, and they have two coops for night time—one small one that was built for the five Silkies (3.5x4 ft with a 4x5 enclosed, predator proof run underneath that they can enter anytime) and one 8x8 coop with no run (but they are...

Time Needed to Insure a Certain Bloodline

Ugh, I totally rewrote the title to this post three times, and I still don’t think it explains what I want to ask. Searching for it was useless since I can’t figure out what the actual words would be, so I’ll just jump in and explain my question! In the future I’d like to breed my Silkies, but...

I need to rehome my flock of chickens

Too far away, but good luck! I second giving Craigslist a try. Make it clear they are getting really close to laying age—a lot of chicken newbies want to give raising them a go but are nervous about getting day old chicks and messing it up with babies. I know that was a big fear of mine...

    Chicken Cliques?

Not a worry so much as a curiosity... but do any of y’all have chickens that move in “cliques”? All my chickens are within a year old of each other but were raised in three different batches. Two of those batches live together (the full size chickens) while the other batch (the Silkies) are in...

When do silkies start to lay?

from my experience, Silkies May start laying as young as 5.5 months or as old as 9 months, but are more likely to lay anywhere between 6.5 and 7.5 months old! (They have some weird “egg timers” going on inside them, LOL 😝)

I Can’t Get Their Rear Ends Out of the Run At Night!

I think I can extend the ramp more without losing head room—the entry from the floor into the coop is wide. Right now my chickens prefer to sleep in the run. They have very little interest in the coop. I think I will just add a nestbox to the run (It’s very secure—the coop is already open to...

    You Dirty (Splashy) Bird, You!

My parents have come to stay with me in the country since the whole COVID thing started, and yesterday my mom walks up, looking worried, saying she thinks one of my chickens has been rolling in charcoal from the bbq. I am not sure what the heck she’s talking about since there is no charcoal...

Open Air Coop In Central Mississippi

This is awesome! I am going to use this design for my West Texas coop—simple yet perfect for hot weather.

First time chicken mama needs help with sexing

They all look like pullets to me, as well. The comb and wattles are small, like a hen. Of course, a roo could always be a very late bloomer, I guess, but at over four months, I’d say they’re pullets.

    Calling all Silkie Breeders!!!

Hi Carly! I am a newbie to chickens, having gotten my first five Silkies four months ago (all pet quality, no show birds), but I hope to breed Silkies in the future! It’s my goal long term. :)

    Show off your roosters

Wow, Bubba is so handsome! My little cockerel, Roodolph, crowed for the first time yesterday, so I have to show off my sweet boy! (Please ignore my ugly foot! 😂)

I Can’t Get Their Rear Ends Out of the Run At Night!

I decided I would do a nice middle ground and build a nest box for the run, leaving the coop open, too, if they want that. They love the run, it’s probably a LOT cooler (I wouldn’t want to be sleeping inside a house if I didn’t have central air conditioning), and it’s covered on two sides by a...

I Can’t Get Their Rear Ends Out of the Run At Night!

Oh my gosh, that is hilarious! My dummy chickens are fearless. They’re not afraid of dogs, roaring lawnmowers, screaming kids, anything! They are adorable but dumb as rocks sometimes. I keep a close eye on em free ranging during the day because I don’t trust them to run away from the things...

I Can’t Get Their Rear Ends Out of the Run At Night!

The coop is 10.5 square feet for 5 bantam silkie chickens, which is the recommendation for bantams. :). As Silkies, they almost never use the roost. Silkies can’t fly, and they prefer to sit on the ground, perch on rocks, etc. mine huddle together when they sleep or sleep against the wall...

I Can’t Get Their Rear Ends Out of the Run At Night!

Do you cover it in the winter? Or just not worry too much about it since our winters are so mild (compared to the North—this sissy Texan still freezes his butt off LOL)
