The others seem okay to me. My silkies have always slept on the ground in a pile or in the nesting boxes, they don’t like to roost so it’s not too unusual for them. It’s just the first time I’ve seen them all in the same nesting box.
The weather has been pretty nice though. I’m in Ontario and...
I’m not really sure what I could’ve done to prevent it though? They had enough nesting boxes and plenty of roosting space that was higher than the nesting box.
this morning I found one of my chickens dead in the nesting box. When I checked our cameras to see what happened I noticed she was one of 3 chickens who slept in the same nesting box last night. I hadn’t noticed anything else wrong with her in the days prior.
Do you think this could be a case...
It does seem like the hen he’s over mating is a very dominant hen who will chase others away from the food. So I think he’s just trying to show dominance to her. He’s just such a big boy that I’m worried about him hurting her.
I know but it’ll break my heart to send him to send him away. I’ve raised him since he was a chick and I really love him.
Right now I have him in a dog crate in the coop because with my work schedule I won’t be able to be there to separate him when he gets rowdy in the evening. Do you think...
I have a 3 year old barred rock rooster who has recently been over mating one hen in particular. During the day they get along just fine but for some reason in the hour before they settle for bed he goes crazy. He’ll mate her several times within the hour, usually chasing her down to do so. It’s...
Just wanted to update. The hen he was chasing has since died from cancer. Everything was peaceful for a while but recently he has started chasing a different hen. I think it’s time to separate him completely from the flock. He’ll be able to see them but not touch them. I just feel bad that he’ll...
She’s not super interested in wet feed but I’ll try to offer her some scrambled egg. She’s seems to be drinking okay so I’ll add the vitamin B to her water.
Hi!
One of my silkie hens recently had crop surgery performed by a vet after I discovered she had an impacted crop. By the time I noticed how bad the impaction was she was severely under weight. The vet removed about a tennis ball sized wad of straw from her crop.
After her surgery she seemed...
That’s good to know, thanks! In retrospect I probably won’t go for production breeds again because they’re really just pets for me, and losing them young to cancer is so heart breaking. I didn’t know at the time I got them about all the associated health issues.
That being said my production...
Is all reproductive cancer linked to Mareks? I’ve lost 2 to cancer in the past which I just assumed was typical of older hatchery hens. But maybe it is Mareks. I just haven’t seen any of the other typical signs so I didn’t make the connection.
Just thought I’d update - she’s still pretty much the same but she did have an eye infection which we cleared up with eye drops so she no longer closed her left eye. Otherwise she seems fine!
Hi,
I have a 3 year old red sex link who isn’t herself. She’s been doing the classic sick bird stance and for a few days and wasn’t going to the feeder or watered but would pig out if I offered her feed mixed with water. Today she is less inclined to eat even that and seems more lethargic...
Does anyone know of any chicken rescue organizations near Toronto? I’d love to adopt some rescue chickens / ex battery hens but I don’t know where to look.
Thanks that’s super helpful! I have some poultry vitamin powder I can add to their water to see if that helps her. I’ll offer some black oil sunflower seeds as well!
