UPDATE: Embro had stopped breathing so I did an eggtopsy and found a formed chick but without the top part of its beak. It was positioned in a way where it could never have pipped. Sad but I do have 9 healthy baby Silkies tweeting from under the brooder :D I will post a photo later today.
I have pierced a tiny hole in the membrane away from all the major veins to allow some air in. He/She is still breathing but his breaths are becoming steadily shallower as the hours pass.
Oh I am so sorry you lost your Silkie. You can never check everything all the time. We have a very secure coop and hen house although I always think it could be even safer. I am just hatching 10 Splash Silkies as this moment. All but one has been successful. How did yours fair? Did they...
I have 9 out of 10 Splash Silkies in varying states of hatch but I had one that had not pipped today (Day 21) No peeping, so I took off air cell which was large, he is still breathing with active blood vessels. However, he/she is upside down with no way to get air. What can be done? I have tried...
An update to Flurry and her babies... I always hate it when I read threads and there is no outcome :)
As it was her first time I gave her a mixed bunch of 5 eggs and she successfully hatched all 5 (all happy and health) 2 roos and 2 pullets & one unknown. She has now proved her status of a...
I have 4 pure bred Silver Laced Wyandottes. Two (Blue Band & PalePink Band) are 7 wks old and the other two (Magenta & White) are 5 wks old. Just wondering if anyone can tell me what gender they are? I'm leaning towards all being pullets but not sure. Blue band is balshy and has more white...
The Menagerie at the moment = 2 Cocker Spaniels, 2 House Rabbits, 18 chickens with a further 22 chicks in various stages of brooder with a strong possibility of a further 5 being born under Momma Silkie hen this very minute :D
Thank you Chookchicken. As it turned out I needn't have worried and should have trusted her judgement. I've just been up to the coop to hand feed her and I could hear some peeping. She is softly chirping encouragement to them. I can't wait to see what is under her. No egg shells have emerged yet.
I have a broody Silkie (her first time) she has been a great mum so far. Sadly I did not take note of when she went broody as I was going to get her off. In the end, as she was being such a dedicated mum, I decided to leave her. However, I don't know how long she has been sitting exactly. She...
Thank you Wyorp Rock, I will definitely take a look at the above links. I should have explained that the pictures are of how she looks today, not of how she looked when she was born. When she was born they were curled up under her like all the pictures of Curled Toe Paralysis you see on the...
Thank you ChickenCanoe, I have 6 CLBs and they may have come from different mothers but equally some could be her siblings and no others are showing a similar problem. I incubated using the Brinsea Maxi EX incubator which regulates the temperature and humidity and I trust it completely. This is...
I am sorry I have no idea but can you post a photo to show what it looks like? I have some 3 wk olds in the brooder and I thought I spotted a tiny amount of blood in poop this morning too. However, I thought this to be unlikely as they have not yet gone outside yet? I will follow to see what...
Three weeks ago today I hatched my first batch of 8 Black Copper Marans and 6 Cream Legbars. I was elated to get a 100% hatch with the BCMs & 75% with the CLBs with 4 girls and 2 boys. Wow was I was blessed!
However, soon after hatching I noticed one of the CLBs was walking on her ankles with...
I have seen many adverts for hatching eggs in the uk for this cross breed recently. I was just wondering the purpose for the cross as they both have the blue egg gene. So I'm thinking, its either...
1.) Because the CL is a more prolific egg layer so will produce a better egg layer with blue...
