Fox Killed All But 1 Chicken

Thanks for the info. It has been helpful. I think I was just in shock thinking of those ideas. I was really surprised to see her alive when I checked the coop. I have a "big" cool and a "little" coop too (a tractor supply coop). I have done the look but don't touch method before when I...

Fox Killed All But 1 Chicken

I personally wouldn't say it is safe nor do I know that it is healthy. That's the thing. My bird looks healthy, but I assume she is a carrier of Coryza because the bird I had the necropsy on had. She didn't die of Coryza though, just happened to be found. I don't know if she got it from wild...

Fox Killed All But 1 Chicken

Thank you for your reply. Yes, these are the issues I see too. I do have a pig. I know that sound funny, but I don't know if they could be kept together and maybe be companions? One other idea is someone I know found a chicken a year ago and they just feed it and it roost in a tree and is on its...

Fox Killed All But 1 Chicken

Hi everyone, This morning, within less than an hour of letting my chickens out at 7:30, a fox came and killed 5 of my chickens. We didn't hear anything! I looked out the window (the coop is right behind my house) and saw the fox outside of the chicken's fence and all the dead chickens inside...

Chickens not roosting on roosting bars

Thanks! Yeah the windows are just openings covered with hardware cloth. Then we made slides with a piece of plywood to close when it got cold. One roost is in a draft the other are not.

Chickens not roosting on roosting bars

I was thinking the same thing and I checked for mites, but didn’t see any. 3 out of 4 were roosted tonight when I left the window open. I think I might try the thick plastic instead.

Chickens not roosting on roosting bars

I wouldn't think so since there are vents in the back that let in light and the one chicken can get on the roost, but who knows, maybe the others can't see as well. I will open one of the windows and then shut it after I shut them up for the night and see if that works. It could be that its too...

Chickens not roosting on roosting bars

Hi everyone, I have been trying to find the answer myself with little luck. Here is my possible problem: I have 4 chickens (hens) that I moved into a 4’x 8’ coop at the beginning of September. I did not have a problem with them roosting at all. There are 3 roost with one being higher than the...

    Pullet died in the night

I got the necropsy report back and she had congestion and hemorrhaging in the lungs and hemorrhaging in her heart. I suppose that could be consistent with a snake constricting her to death. However, it also said that she had hepatitis. I’ve google searched it a bit and found some info on it, but...

    Pullet died in the night

We definitely think it was a snake. It came back last night at dusk. The girls were still out and it got into their opened door to get eggs. We got rid of it. This really sucks. Now I’m having a problem with the other chickens being mean to the surviving pullet. They are cool free range with...

    Pullet died in the night

A snake could have got in. This was a temporary enclosure until their new bigger coop was built and they could go with the bigger girls. However, the build got put off. I always thought rat snakes were diurnal, so we just used the fencing we had available. The enclosure is about 3’x5’ and I had...

    Pullet died in the night

Hi everyone, I am so upset because one of my newish pullets died at some point last night. I checked on them before I went to bed and everyone was fine. When I got up and checked on them one was dead in the little dog crate I have in their enclosure. I have had them over a month with no signs of...

    Integrating new chickens

Thanks! It is hard letting them work it out. I think the new Buff Orphington is going to be top hen though.

Pretty sure these RIR’s are cockrels

I think pullets as well. My female RIR that ended up being a male had a much larger comb at this age.

    Integrating new chickens

Hey everyone! I just wanted to see if I was doing this right and to see if anyone had any suggestions if not or if I could do something better. We have 2 RIRs hens since we recently rehomed our rooster. When we rehomed our roo the farm we gave him to sold us 1 laying Buff Orphington and 2...
