Same hen was panting heavily. Checked vent and feathers around it. Looked normal & actually pretty clean. Was in & out of coop more than normal, seemed to be trying to lay maybe? Other than that, nothing else. All I can think is heat stress, but I’m surprised it mainly seems to be her & 2 other...
As to other signs, they don’t seem lethargic. Ate normally. Drank a little less, which I found a bit odd. Still curious as ever, & interested w/everything I do. No droopiness. Noticed 1 laid an egg under the coop instead of in. Think it was either a new hen laying egg or it was cooler there...
Scratching corn & dandelion leaves. Nothing they haven’t had before. There’s nothing toxic growing in or around their own so I don’t think it’s something they ate?
I thought cecal poo at first 2, but that was the 3rd or 4th loose movement from the same hen in about an hour.
Having made saline a lot, advise you boil the water (to sterilise as much as possible) then add the salt & let it cool down in container in the fridge or freezer to room temp before using it, especially on eyes. Lots of simple recipes for saline explain the proper ratios out there.
Anything...
Some of my gals had (I think) diarrhea today. I can’t quite seem to figure out what’s up. Some of the girls appeared to be panting, & I changed everything to cold water which they seemed to appreciate it. About 1/2 of their run is shaded & there is lots of sand (which was a cooler 68F). It was...
It’s 18% protein. I had mixed granite w/their feed per the bag’s instructions, but they also have a dish of it separately. (I noticed some of the gals preferred getting it out of feed bc they would try to scratch both mix the 2 then eat it together.)
They get an 8 oz cup of treats per day for...
I cleaned out maggots from a wound in my dog by using a simple Saline rinse & then packing the wound with sugar. Sugar is a debriding agent so it will keep any wound clean, but you need to thoroughly rinse it out ever 16-24hrs. Maybe try diatomaceous earth & sand for her to dust bathe in too...
One of my gals got injured at about week 12 & broke her leg. (We splinted it within minutes & she made it. Doesn’t even limp!) I’m expecting she at least will take probably the longest to lay because she needed extra time & calcium to heal her broken leg. She’s also on the small side compared to...
I have 10 backyard chickens. All are BSL & siblings, we believe all are gals. We got our first eggs on Monday & have had about 14 total. I know for sure at least 3 of my hens are laying & suspect it may actually be 5. 1 seems to lay very thin shelled eggs, ultra fine & leathery, that don’t seem...
So glad to have found this thread. My fiancé is Japanese & wants to raise Onagadori chickens. He has a special affinity for birds & it means a lot to him to try to keep the breed alive. We are hoping to be able to get some in there next 1-2 years, but will see how things go. In the meantime I’m...
It’s certainly been a great quarantine & lockdown distraction! 😆 we got blindsided with snowing until mid-May (we got the chicks 23rd of March) & couldn’t put them out so they got a good 8 weeks in the house & 4 in the garage at night bc it was so cold & they weren’t quite feathered. Can’t...
I think at this point the whole family would just be very excited to see any eggs, but some blue or green ones would be an unexpected bonus. Hoping ours are all hens too. (We have 10) One of our neighbouring farmers bought “black sex-link female chicks” from the same place as we did. He bought...
Was sold this chick as a Barred Rock hen. It definitely not a Barred Rock, I suspect either black or red sex-link. Real question is, is this a cockerel? Pics at days 2 & 4, 2 wks & now at 19 weeks.
Pictures of the other 2 I strongly suspect are roosters. The 1st shown in the first set of images was the runt of the flock, though very adventurous, is always the first to seek out food, & take a curious pecks from day 1. It also developed the largest comb of all at 13 weeks, & was the first to...
