Hi all, hope everyone is happy and well. My little brood is thriving, thank you. We lost our old dark Brahma bantam cockerel earlier this year - heartbreaking as he was hatched at home 9 years ago and much loved by us all. My young Barnevelder cockerel (hatched under 2 broody hens, that's...
Same as above, drakes whisper, hens quack, though not always. When one of my drakes lost his companion many years ago he quacked louder than I've ever heard a duck quack before, it was very sad. Of course the curly tail gives it away once they reach sexual maturity. Lovely babies.
Hello everyone, he turned out to be a she. I always find it a little frustrating when people start these threads then don't come back to let us know what the outcome was (as others find this useful), so thought I would let everyone know that we have another hen, and I think you'll agree she's...
He is very cute. I keep 3 cockerels together (at one time I had 4) and never had a problem. The odd skirmish but, to be honest, my hens have quarrels more often than the boys do!
Welcome to the forum.
Good advice above already :)
If she is still weight-bearing it is unlikely to be a break, so likely a strain, sprain or bruising from minor injury. My rule-of-thumb is to wait and see if weight-bearing (I would hope for significant improvement within a week) but a vet...
Sorry to hear about your girls, it must have been terrifying for them. I'm lucky that we have well established nettles and docks growing outside the run. Most people would probably think it looks messy with weeds growing freely, but I keep them there for this very reason (plus natural shade)...
Thanks for all the responses. Now he/she is about 14 weeks old. I'm still not sure what we have!!! I'm still leaning towards cockerel. I've tried to get a pic of the comb and tail, also a pic with his/her father.
Hi all, lovely to be here :frow
I've been keeping hens for 20 years or so (every other animal under the sun for FAR longer-ex vet nurse). My most notable hen moment was visiting our local 'petting farm' type of place to purchase some chicks, being shown their mega-amazing, latest technology...
Hello, I'm brand new here, though I've dipped in and out as a lurker many times over the years. Great forum :)
I wondered if anyone would be kind enough to give their opinion of the sex of my 8 week (just over) chick. I was leaning towards pullet, probably because that's what I hope she/he is...
