I know it's not a *specific* practice but VEG clinics take chickens! We have a VEG clinic in San Ramon and Pleasant Hill and they are awesome. They only do emergency level care, but they will work really hard for the best outcome for your animal. They generally try to always have a 'bird person'...
She is my only white egg layer, and has been laying last year and just started up again. I know Anconas are supposed to have big floppy combs but hers are gimongous with super big wattles(see photo) and she looks like a rooster! She has also started to boss the other chickens around more. She is...
Our run is pretty lacking in daytime security(just a 6' chicken wire fence to keep the chickens IN-they used to free range but I like to keep them separated from my dog and out of the big garden) but the coop itself has locks on all the doors and is raised up off of the ground with hardware...
Nice! We have some of the same breeds! I love buckeyes so much, they will always be part of my flock. We lost the EE two weeks ago to sudden death-still have no idea, but likely a reproductive issue-she was fine when I put them to bed and gone in the morning when I went to let them out, no signs...
I have a 2 1/2 YO Cuckoo Marans who is our lead hen and the noisiest chicken I have by far. Not sure if that counts? She is quieter right now because she is coming out of a hard molt, but most mornings I worry about the neighbors complaining if I'm at all late letting them out lol
I'm gutted. We just lost Kevin this morning suddenly. I think she was egg bound. She was laying almost too frequently, and then she had slowed the past few days but I chalked it up to winter slowdown...she was fine when I put them to bed, and gone when I went up to let them out this morning...
Brahmas can take forever. Mine is about the same age as yours and no eggs yet, but her vent says she should be ready! My Sussex is the same age and not laying either, which is more concerning. Of my 5 same age pullets only 2 are laying and my EE just slowed down. Winter for us is always just a...
My 2 1/2 YO Buff Brahma is the sweetest(poor girl is recovering from a super tough molt but she's been so sweet through the whole ordeal). My Light Brahma pullet is a big sweet dork too. My EE and Buckeye pullets are also very sweet girls. I have a Buff Orpington that I would happily put on the...
Good luck! GOod to know I'm not the only one scratching my head about this this year. I only have 1 layer(my EE) out of 5 pullets and mine are now 23 weeks. My Buckeye, Sussex and Wyandotte should prob all be laying-the Brahma taking longer is not unusual. I did see the Sussex going in and out...
Thanks! We are really enjoying them! They are a bit less tame than our first 'pandemic' batch, as I don't spend ALL day with them, only some of it lol. But still friendly and ready to come running for treats...just not fans of being picked up!
She is so awesome. I have wanted a bearded chicken forever, and am so pleased she lays such thick-shelled pretty eggs! She is def top hen of the new batch, waiting to see how it all falls out as they start to lay and the pecking order shakes out. (she is named after Kevin of Minions fame)
Just posting an update and thought y'all would enjoy some chicken photos.
We added 5 to our flock of 3 this spring after losing one to illness over the winter. My 2 1/2 YO are a Cuckoo Marans(Sosgei), Buff Orp(Lemon) and a beloved Buff Brahma(Flossie). Both buffs are currently molting, and the...
It's been a busy spring and I meant to update already! My 5 chicks arrived and are now 3 weeks, and super healthy and active! THey go out in their chick pack n' play (chicken tent) during the day and get to forage in the dirt a little and hang out in the shade. My 3 older chickens are completely...
