Thank you for your reply. How do I find the healthiest birds? I’ve been wondering about this. Local hatcheries or mail order day old chicks from reputable hatcheries? Are there breeds that tend to be more resilient? I’ll be doing some research but any advice is welcome.
Not confirmed by a vet but the symptoms seem pretty clear to me. Swollen eyelids and foamy eyes are specific symptoms of the disease and not otherwise explainable as far as I know. She also sneezes a lot and always has. I got her from a flock that was being downsized. Live and learn… I won’t do...
Hi all,
I could use some advise. I’ve lost 3 of my 5 hens in the last year. They were 4.5-5.5 years old and I was told by a vet that it was either heart failure or cancer for 2 of them. The third was a mystery and the post mortum showed nothing. They were Austrolorps so perhaps not the longest...
Ok I was thinking this might be the case and had also wondered if she was dumped because of this issue. Well as long as I’m not failing to do something for her I’ll just let her be. I appreciate your help on the matter.
Hi all. Egg production in my flock of 4 has been low and mostly non- existent for the last year. They are getting older so maybe it’s no surprise but I added a new hen and I have no idea how old she is. She was found on the side of the road. She lays eggs sporadically. I feed an all-flock feed...
I called the feed store where I bought my chicks 4 years ago and they said they’ve always vaccinated all chicks against Merek’s. Whew. One less thing to worry about.
I was just speaking to my husband about getting buckets for the feed. I’m glad to hear that it is working for you. Do you get the lids that screw on?
I’m definitely wondering if my flock has Marek’s now. I’ll be taking a stool sample to my vet to be tested.
Thank you for your reply.
I don’t think the feed was moldy. No smell and I live in a very dry climate. We have to work to keep things moist here. I think it was old and degraded. I offer both layer feed and all-flock and sometimes if it’s on sale I’ll buy a couple bags of each. I think the mites had plenty of time to eat...
Sorry I never saw your post and questions until now. I got the hen as a chick from a farm store and I’m pretty sure they had been vaccinated against marek’s. Isn’t it common practice to vaccinate the chicks being sold commercially? There was no tumor.
Hi all,
I hope I’m doing this right by using the old thread I created. I have a new question related to the sick hen that is discussed in this thread. Last week I realized that the annoying dust that is the main ingredient in my chicken feed is grain mites. I had no idea about these pests so...
I had the vet do a necropsy and there was no blockage. She had undigested food in her stomach despite not having eaten in 2 days. Otherwise everything looked normal. I wish I knew what happened.
This is why I hate taking chickens to the vet.
They did an X-ray and there’s no obvious blockage. There is a suspicious area near her stomach. Some kind of mass potentially They could do surgery but say she’s probably too weak to make it through. Nothing is making it past her crop so there...
Here’s an update. After she vomited the smelly crop water I syringed the sugar/baking soda/salt water mixture into her. The whole cup. Did some massaging. Waited. Syringed 2 teaspoons of olive oil and massaged her crop. She looks miserable. What should I do now?
I haven’t used the activated...
Ok so this morning I checked her crop like @LaFleche recommended. It was full and watery and I tipped her forward and massaged her crop and a ton of clear smelly liquid came out. Now I’m syringing the sugar/baking soda/salt/water mixture that @azygous recommended and planning on going out to buy...
