    Unable to walk

It sounds like you did all you could. I’m sorry for your loss. If you are in the US, next time you have a sick or dead chicken you can call the State Vet, often they are connected to the state’s land grant University if you have trouble finding it. Sometimes they know of bird vets or can...

8 week pullet eye looking funky

Just to chime in with my experience, fowl pox has really irritated the eyes of my flock this year. I’ve had 5 pullets with scabby eyes so bad they’ve had one closed and I’ve treated them with neosporin to cushion the cornea from the scabs scraping against it. As soon as the scabs have gone...

Cream Legbar Cockerels Savannah GA area

I have 3 cream Legbar cockerels, originally from Meyer Hatchery raised by my hen. $25 each. Hen raised roosters rarely become people-aggressive so these are a great first rooster if you’ve never had one. They are a good age to add to a flock of mature hens, old enough that they are starting to...

    My rooster hates me :-(

His brain is now wired to see you as a threat and that’s not going to change. You probably wouldn’t put up with a dog that attacks people, there’s no reason to put up with a rooster that does either. If you can’t kill him yourself, you can take him to a vet and have him euthanized like people do...

Need tips/hacks for separating broody hens

I often have multiple broodies and I let them sit where they choose and only move them (if needed) after the chicks have hatched and the mama understands that they are hers, otherwise she will continue to try to get back to her original nest. I agree with Mrs. K that for a day or two you should...

Selling eggs in GA? Or in general!

No, but I can see where you may have got that idea. According to this UGA website: To be sold, all chicken eggs must be evaluated by a certified grader and appropriately packaged and labeled in accordance with the Georgia Egg Law and Georgia Food Act. To sell eggs to a grocery store, bakery or...

Question On Integrating a Broody and Her Chicks

My flock has never interfered with hatching but I’m sure it depends on the flock, the hen’s status and aggression level. (This assumes the nest box is chick-safe and has sides they can get out of and back in.) On hatch day(s) the hen will still want to sit on the remaining eggs while the...

    How long did it take?

I have a spreadsheet for my hens’ multiple broods and it varies a little bit from hen to hen but the main factor is the time of year. In early summer they usually raise chicks for 3-4 weeks then go back to laying. Mid to Late summer is longer, usually 5-6 weeks. Fall and winter chicks can be...

Help - My Hens' eye keeps getting worse

If you can’t get her to the vet it might be time to euthanize her. Her quality of life right now can’t be very good.

It’s been a few days, how is she doing with the chicks now?

Putting hatched chicks with broody hen

I do NOT recommend moving the hen until after she has bonded with her new chicks. I rushed that last year and had a panicking broody stomping on her new chicks, it was bad. The way I have success is take the earliest hatched chicks and put them with her at night (as soon as they are dry) and...

Are some broods of chicks just more aggressive than others?

One thing that I’ve learned about recently is that a lot of our lightbulbs look like strobe lights to chickens. Many lights don’t list their blink rate but if you record a video in slow motion and see the light blink on and off it could be causing some issues with your chicks. Trying to learn...

That’s great! Is he a lone chick or do you have others that didn’t get chilled?

Urgent help needed!!!!! 1 week old chick possibly hypothermic

Sorry for my late reply. It will take an hour at least. I think holding him close is better than an incubator while he is in distress. Your body will comfort him. Baby chicks should never be alone. When he is better you will be able to tell. He will be sleepy, not active or crying, and his...

Don’t worry about food or water until the chick is warm.

Urgent help needed!!!!! 1 week old chick possibly hypothermic

When I’ve had chilled chicks I put them in my shirt against my upper chest for an hour at least. Body heat and contact will help your chick get warm and feel comforted. (To be blunt, put the chick against a non-boob area, fat is an insulator so it would not warm them as fast.)

How old are chickens that start laying eggs discrepancies?

I raised a lot of chicks last summer and all the pullets that hatched in May or later did not start to lay until this February (9 months at most). All of the pullets that hatched in March or April began to lay at about 5 months old and laid eggs all winter. It is also influenced by breed and all...

    YO GEORGIANS! :)

I don’t have any help for you as far as your actual question but I did move to Georgia with my chickens and I can recommend that you look into the rules to bring in poultry. Before I moved from Wyoming I had to have a Wyoming vet look at them and get a Certificate of Veterinary Inspection...
