HELP! Hen with really swollen butt below vent and feather loss

Hi there @DorothyBlancheandRose - this sounds like it could be similar to what I'm experiencing right now (I just posted photos here: https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/gleet-ascites-help-warning-gross-pics.1480949/#post-24679928). I'm in the same boat as you, thinking/hoping it's not...

Gleet? Ascites? Help! (Warning: Gross pics)

I can contact the feed store to ask re: the ingredients, but it's 17% protein and 3.5% calcium. All hens are fed the same diet and only one has these issues. They get treats every day and I try to limit to 10% of diet. They get mealworms, leftover veggies (mainly chard, spinach, cilantro)...

Gleet? Ascites? Help! (Warning: Gross pics)

Hi all! To start, a quick overview of our situation here: 5 laying hens in total, no roosters All 1 year old, got them all together when they were 4 months old We saw symptoms of mycoplasma (MG) shortly after getting them - treated with Tylosin - have not seen symptoms since, and they are...

Lovely colour palette from our 5 hens!

My 5 girls are officially all laying! They are mycoplasma (MG) positive and our days are very cold and short, so we weren't sure how many eggs we'd be getting, but we recently had our first 5-egg day where everyone laid, and we are averaging over 3 eggs a day from our 5 ladies this month so far...

Concerning behaviour?! Egg song, but no egg

Haha thanks, yes I've heard of this behaviour! The reason I'm a bit concerned though is that it's the hen who has ALREADY started laying who is doing this. She should be giving me her 5th egg, and instead she sat in the nest for 2-3 hours yesterday and today and made lots of noise, but no egg...

Concerning behaviour?! Egg song, but no egg

Hi all - I have 5 hens who are all 7 months old now. Just after new year's, 2 of them began laying (sill waiting on the other 3)!!! So exciting. Anyways, my Black Copper Marans is in and out of the nesting box without much fuss, but my Orpington is particularly noisy and takes her sweet time...

Chickens eating shavings, should I be worried?

When I first brought my pullets home, they were eating what I thought was an alarming amount of pine shavings. Especially when I changed the shavings! Luckily they seemed to grow out of it after a month or two, and none of them showed any negative symptoms. So I bet your girls will be fine.

    Got my first egg!

Congratulations! I just got my first one as well and it looks similar to yours! Can I ask what breed this was (if you know)?? :)

FIRST EGG from hens who have been through a lot!!!

I purchased my 5 pullets they were about 3.5 months old, and they're now 6.5 months. Shortly after getting them, we found out they are all mycoplasma positive (weren't symptomatic when we got them but the stress of the move brought it out in full force) and they also had lice. Some good reasons...

This is helpful, thank you! I'm staying hopeful that they'll have relatively normal lives!

New chicken owner - flock is positive for mycoplasma - what now?

Hi all! 6 weeks ago, I purchased my first hens. 5 pullets who are now about 18 weeks old, from a farm with a much larger flock. I checked them all for signs of illness when I bought them and they all looked good, but a little while after bringing them home, one got foamy eyes, nasal discharge...

Feathers on hen's foot?! Black Copper Marans

Hi all! New chicken keeper here! Wasn't sure where to put this thread, hopefully this is ok. I've done some googling but haven't been able to find my hen's particular presentation of this, so thought I'd ask you all. My ~17 week old pullet, a Black Copper Marans hybrid (I think crossed with...

    How much itching/scratching/grooming is normal?

Just wanted to post a quick follow-up to this in case it's helpful to anyone with similar issues - we checked the birds a few times and couldn't see any bugs, but I was confident we were missing them. I took one bird to the vet and it took them a while but they eventually found a few lice! If...

    How much itching/scratching/grooming is normal?

I checked one bird for lice/mites and didn't see any, though it was difficult to do what I'd consider a comprehensive check because they are still nervous around us.

    How much itching/scratching/grooming is normal?

Hi everyone! I've had my 5 pullets (~16 weeks old) for a week now and am a first-time chicken keeper. I'm noticing they are doing quite a lot of scratching at themselves during the day when they are in the coop. I am not sure if this is normal grooming/preening (I don't see them go for the preen...
