Mine are coturnix. They are mostly related to each other, but I do notice that some look and act like the “line” they came from.
Maybe some of my birds are just of a variety where they mature slower than others?
Hey guys,
Have any you guys experienced quail sometimes not ever reaching sexual maturity?
I have a coop of three quail, of which one is larger and two are smaller and none of them have ever reached adulthood. No foam. No eggs. I cant recall how old they are, but I have some that were born a...
Hey guys,
I haven’t been around in a while, but I have a question. When do birds start laying again in spring? I have about 14 females who haven’t laid a single egg in a couple months, and I’m tempted to cull them and hatch more. They are about a year old, or maybe 1.25 years old.
Do you...
Hey guys,
My blue egg layers have a tendency to have calcium deposits on the outside of their shells. Sometimes they are white, More often brown orblack.
I can scrape them of during sterilization f, but do I need to?
Are the speckles draping bacteria? Or just part of the shell.
Hey there, I have some rhode Island Red/leghorn mix chicks that are about the same age as some Silkie/Melfleur mix ones. Someone wants to buy one RIR/LH and a couple of the fluffy foot ones, and I’m wondering—how careful do they need to be about mixing the chicks?
They are the same age, but...
Update: I never managed to catch it to put on ointment, and sort of figured it would either make it or not.
Not only is it doing fine, but I’m getting the sense its the dominat bird in the flock.
She is one bad chicken.
Hey guys.
Have a cat attack last night. One of my chicks, who is maybe 2 weeks old, got it’s wing pulled off.
It’s walking around with the others, though (in true chicken form) sometimes picking at it. >.<
I should cull it, right? I mean...can a chicken live without a wing?
Has anyone else noticed that quail seem happier if you keep them in smaller groups?
Sometimes I think my quail who live together in a big group (20-30) are doing okay, but other times it seems like small groupings of 4-7 adults are more harmonious. I’d never try to fit 60 birds in 60 square...
Yeah, most of them aren't mature yet. Though yesterday I got 10 eggs, so a fair number are.
One issue is that the rain really took its toll. I think it out strain on the flock, and maybe that's why the mature boys (if they exist), aren't as foamy as usual.
During the worst of the rains, it was...
Here is a weird one...
I went out to my main coop to sex my birds today, as I've noticed a few of them looking kind of ragged.
I had around 30 birds in about 64 square feet. they are varying ages. I get 7-8 eggs per day from the mature girls and I THOUGHT I had at least 2 mature males in...
I’m gonna be real—I dont feel like this “forced air” fan is doing much. I can barely feel it blowing.
I have three different thermometers in the incubator, and they measure as low as 94.5 degree on the floor of the ‘bator (below the egg-turning rails), as as high as 104 degrees on top of the...
I just set some eggs to hatch, and realized I’ve been storing them pointy end up.
They are less than a week old. Do you think I reduced the hatch ability so much by storing them that way that I should scrap it and just collect more eggs?
Or does it not make too much difference if the eggs are...
Okay, thanks. I’d thought about correcting people on facebook about this...but ultimately walked away.
If people wanted to know real answers, they’d be on BYC, not asking randoms on FB.
Hey there.
I just tricked out my farm innovators incubator with a heater that has a Fan. Before, I hatched without a fan.
My previous hatches, I had the temperature to 102, which made it about 99.5 on top of the eggs. (I hatch quail. So 99.5 is my goal.)
Question: do I set the temperate lower...
I’m in a discussion on another board about quail behavior, and I need to understand something...
1. Do male quail go after/attack/warn away predators the way a chicken rooster would?
2. Do male quail crow to scare away predators?
I really thought the crow was just to show off for the girls...
interesting. pretty much all the chicks in this hatch pipped but then didn't unzip. It was weird. But I do know that my birds were kind of malnourished and not at their best when they laid these eggs. Maybe that explains why they are all weak.
Hey guys,
I have several newly hatched chicks laying on their side in the incubator. (I "helped" and they were born a bit premature.)
a couple have perked up and are walking. Others...are taking longer. My question is--should I give them electrolyte solution or just let them be? I dropped a...
