I washed her because she had some poop stuck to her feathers. I now wonder if the other hens are pecking at her in the coop. Their pecking order is in disarray due to the loss of our rooster and two other hens, plus the addition of a newly hatched chick. I separated her for the night.
Can anyone tell me what's happening with my 2-year-old Leghorn? She just laid a well-formed egg. These photos were taken after I washed her backside with Dawn and applied Vetricin and an antifungal ointment. I suspect the problem is on the inside though. The bulge below her vent is red, hot, and...
Hello everyone. My 2- week old chick just got out and had her neck pecked raw. I reunited her with her mama, who promptly pecked the chick’s neck, presumably because it is red. Can I keep them to whether if I use Vetericyn and bandage her skinny little neck? Or will she be killed by her own mother?
Hello again, incredibly helpful people. One of my Wyandottes is making a constant sound, “Aaaaaah squeak! Aaaaaah squeak!” She is otherwise acting normally, free ranging with the others. She did attack another hen tho, which left her a little bloodied. What to you make of her constant sound...
It’s helpful to reframe the problem as the dang rooster, not the hen. I have seen him save the hens from hawk attacks but beyond that he is just a bully—I’m not trying to raise chicks. They are free range so hawks etc. are a threat. I will keep her in her saddle and away from him and await the...
She was mostly separate for three weeks but I had one other hen in with her for a week and also brought her out to a fenced in area for a week so the others could see and interact with her. Then I supervised as they all hung out together. I learned a lot from all of you here at BC—very grateful...
Ok, I will get her special protein and a good saddle. She does seem to be my rooster’s favorite, so this might be just what she needs. Many thanks for your help!
One rooster, nine hens. I will investigate hen saddles—don’t know much about them. I don’t want to press down the feathers she does have, since it is cold out….
One of my Wyandottes has looked like this for months. I brought her inside to see if she would grow feathers if left alone and it took three weeks for some pin feathers to appear. I put her back out and of course she is being bullied, in spite of my efforts to reintegrate her. It’s cold here...
I hope you'll consider showing him that you are the boss before killing him. My rooster doesn't bother me -- all I had to do when he was a slightly jerky adolescent last summer was lean in and stare him down hard -- but he does bother others. He still acts like he's thinking about bothering me...
Many thanks for your warm welcomes and your speedy replies. It was very helpful to hear from you. I think you are right -- she seems to have an injury, not a disease, and needs to rest inside. Today she is finally putting a little weight on her leg. She's still holding it up most of the time...
Hello. My 5-month-old Wyandotte is suddenly holding one leg off the ground -- this just started today. Yesterday she was reluctant to leave the coop and today she did not leave it at all. I have her in a cage in the house now. I do not see signs of mites, bumble foot, or injury, and she is...
