It's approaching point-of-lay for the new flock, and they're gonna need someplace to lay eggs soon!
I'm looking for plans for a roll-out community next box.
There was a link in one of the forums that had decent drawings I could work off of, but I can't find that post now! Help!
If I recall...
Any paint you can buy will be fine. Some will stick to the wood longer than others, some will fade less, or chalk less, and there are many different colors. None are going to make a hen fall over dead after licking it.
The brooder:
Four (soon to be six) 2' x 4' frames, covered in tileboard and hardware cloth, and just stuck together with some screws. I'm putting together some 2'x4' chicken wire lids to set on top. The bottom is just an old plastic tarp with about four inches of shavings on top, then 32 birds...
McMurray must have been pulling from the same vat this weekend. I have a free rare chick that looks just like that one. Still no clue what it is, either.
(I'll put up a few pics of mine later. Perhaps we can find someone who can figure it out.)
They'll eat it, like they eat almost everything! Read up on the signs, symptoms, and prevention of coccidiosis so you know what to watch for.
Any medicated feed sold in the U.S. will have big letters on the feed tag (usually sewn into the top or bottom of the bag) that look like this...
A rather odd chain of events led to me getting a commercial pesticide applicator's license with certification to treat animals.
There's really only one thing to remember: READ AND FOLLOW THE darn DIRECTIONS!
Some formulations of Sevin are labeled for use directly on chickens. Carbaryl is some...

Hook it to a small electric motor that will drive a rack and pinion gear, or some belt system to raise (or lower) the door, then switch off/flip to reverse (just like an overhead garage door does).
Use another controller to...
It's a nice setup, but that's not much space to garden. You could always look into square foot gardening or other methods to maximize production, though.
As for access, can you get a garden hose in, around, and out? Will a wheelbarrow, rototiller, other garden tools or equipment fit through...
Pros and cons... It'll weaken the plywood a bit, but I don't know if it will make a difference structurally unless you've built at the extremes of joist spacing and thin plywood. Also, without a binder, I don't know how long the treatment would last, but it would make a moisture barrier.

5 golden laced cochins, all roos.
Probability: 3%. With enough people ordering, not that unlikely. I'm hoping to be on the other 3% side who get all pullets.
5 silver laced wyandottes, 4 were roos
Probability: 16%. About one in seven who order five straight run birds will get this mix.

1080 works really well. So well that it has secondary toxicity problems. Critters that eat the critters you poison can die too. (That's the reason I've heard for the ban.) It's also easy to mis-handle through carelessness or accident, poisoning the user or someone else through something they...
If your customers want you to go organic, or not use GMOs, or only feed your hens from your hand, or apply gold leaf to each egg... see if they are willing and really committed to pay the price increases you'll need to cover the expense of production. Our eggs will go for $3/doz, and could go...
If you want to be sure, test it. It will show the CP4 EPSPS protein in the seed. Grind it up in a little water and use a test strip (EnviroLogix makes some, I'm sure there are others).
