Ended 12th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-Along—Farthest Shipped Eggs!

Hello, my zipcode is 42701, and my 10 hens and one rooster dropped off the eggs. 😉

One hen ate one of of my "hatch-a-long" eggs

Thank you so much! This is a little overwhelming, but since we are only one week in, gestation, I feel I have some time to prepare without being completely overwhelmed. Since we are still having cold spells, I think I will set her up on my covered back porch. It is very sunny and I usually keep...

One hen ate one of of my "hatch-a-long" eggs

They are in the run because we have two hawks that refuse to leave, three foxes that sneak around at night, neighbor children that harass them (I'm currently in the city, without a privacy fence 😭) and they have destroyed my garden space. I HATE pinning them up in a run, but I fear more trouble...

One hen ate one of of my "hatch-a-long" eggs

I feed them organic scratch grain, fresh vegetables and fruit, worms, both from my garden and meal worms, oyster shell, grit, and some food scraps. I have just recently placed them in a run, before that ( during the winter) they roamed freely in my garden and around the backyard.

One hen ate one of of my "hatch-a-long" eggs

Let's pray it works. 😁 I don't know whose more excited about the idea of chicks, my 4 & 5 year olds or myself. Just out of curiosity, do you think the hen that ate the egg is NOT getting enough to eat? Could that be why she ate it?

One hen ate one of of my "hatch-a-long" eggs

Okay, I have them numbered, and actually caught the egg-eater, so I will set her up away from the others, but also place a cat carrier inside the coop, so Momma and hopefully, fertile eggs (they all had a darker area inside when I candled them last night) will have a safe zone away from the...

One hen ate one of of my "hatch-a-long" eggs

Not that I am aware, but this is my very first time ever attempting any sort of hatching. I've only ever purchased chicks then collected their eggs daily when they started laying.

One hen ate one of of my "hatch-a-long" eggs

Good morning. I marked 13 eggs last week to see if they would hatch. Last night, I caught one hen eating one of the eggs, so I temporarily moved my broody hen and the remaining 12 eggs into my dog's crate, in my kitchen. Will it be safe to place Momma and the eggs in an open cat carrier in the...

What should the humidity percentage be in my coop during the winter? We currently have 4-6 inches of snow and ice on and around our coop, with another 4" or more coming in tonight, through the weekend. The humidity percentage in my coop is currently 74%. I feel that is too much for it being so...

Looking for mealworms for my ducks at a reasonable price.

That is good to know. I just did it as an experiment, since I didn't have any vegetables at the time. However, I didn't even think about grain mites, especially since I keep my worms relatively cool (on my back porch). I haven't set up a complete system with the adult beetles yet. Thank you for...

Looking for mealworms for my ducks at a reasonable price.

Good afternoon, I have recently figured out a way. I currently keep my worms in a tall, narrow bucket, covered with a cotton cloth. Somehow, my cloth fell into the bucket and the worms climbed on top of it. I didn't want to crush them, so I used my spray bottle that I water my plants with, and...

Looking for mealworms for my ducks at a reasonable price.

I buy live ones from TSC. They are $65 for roughly 100,000 with free shipping. The dried ones are much more expensive. Though, I only purchase them in the winter months; the rest if the year, the wild bugs feed them since they free range.

    That's awesome!!! I'm glad she's doing well.

Chicken with large head wound on back of head, how to wrap?

If you have RAW honey, apply that to the wound. It is antimicrobial and a wound healer. If you feel more comfortable, you can alternate the honey and the neosporin. I hope she helps quickly.

    Hens laying in winter-ok?

I have 10 girls, all 7 months old and they are laying. Though, my amount of eggs differs each day, from 4 -10. Apparently, they are finding enough calcium and protein, despite being winter. Enjoy it! 💃🕺

My rooster (7 months) was attacked by hawks.

I saw both hawks the day after, followed by three large, red foxes the following three nights. It's been very cold, overcast, and rainy the rest of the time and there hasn't been a sign of any of the predators since.

My rooster (7 months) was attacked by hawks.

Good morning everyone. I have a few questions. Last Sunday, my flock was attacked by 2 hawks. They killed one hen and carried off my rooster. A day and a half later, today is one week to the day, he returned with no back feathers and only a few tail feathers, his middle toe was cut, slightly...
