LGD: seeking advice from experienced owners

Hi- We have a pair of Maremmas about 3 years old on our Homestead. They guard the chickens and the sheep. Very gentle low prey drive and stay in the corral they could easily escape. Puppies born last november. https://sheepandwarriors.com/

Advice for a Farm Dog please. Scotch Collie, English Shepherd, Pyrenees, etc. ?

Hi- From what I'm gathering about he pyrenese it sounds like the sterotype it right. I have fencing the Maremmas could easily get through but they don't. If I leave a gate open like a dummy they will go for a day trip, but otherwise no. Not one chicken loss since having them to hawks...

Training a puppy to guard chickens

I do think that is it. If you have a dog with prey drive that is high you are going to have a problem unless their drive to please you is higher.

Training a puppy to guard chickens

My dogs didn't have much of an interest in the chickens, but we did watch them and correct them as puppies. The puppies we have now are introduced to the chickens and the sheep early to try and desensitize they're reaction. No problems with the maremmas here.

What breed do you recommend to live outside in a fenced yard and protect chickens?

We have Maremmas. Like Pyrenes but less popular, a little smaller and supposedly less tendency to roam. Mine stay in the fenced yard they could easily get out of if they really wanted to. Very nice to people, but not other animals. Protects my chickens and my sheep. We have puppies also ready...

Need help giving roaster a shot in breasts

I got that part. It was the pushing of the liquid in the duck. Maybe I had a weird syringe? Today we did another injection in the other breast and no problems at all. We'll see if it happens again I guess. Thank you for responding.

Need help giving roaster a shot in breasts

    1) I considered, but no resistence when not in the bird like it was clearing an obstruction. Still, maybe... 2) I tried a few different locations in the breast and the result seemed the same 3) I would like something subcutaneous I think, they say don't go very deep at all with the IM so maybe...

Severly Injured Hen - What would you do? (warning, contains very graphic pictures)

This was the film from the vet. It cost $200. The wing is off and Winky is doing remarkably well. It was a very tough surgery and took every bit of me and three of my kids. I think if infection can be held at bay it will be successful. It has been a little over 48 hours.

Need help giving roaster a shot in breasts

Yes, it is just wehn I put the needle in it is really hard to push the plunger. I was just successful with a 22 guage needle but I really had to push it hard and it finally shot in there. I've only ever givin little insulin shots in people and they just go right in.

    African goose with eye infection

Hi, How did it go? I'm trying to give penicillin to my 9# duck, but its so very hard to get through the down and and when I did I couldn't get the shot to inject. I tried three times and felt bad and went for more research. It squirted fine outside the duck. I didn't want to go too far into...

Severly Injured Hen - What would you do? (warning, contains very graphic pictures)

I get it, no issues putting an animal down, but when they're happy with their injury I'm less inclined to jump for that solution. I like to think if it were me what would I want, so that's how I roll out the decisions. Nothing appears infected.

Severly Injured Hen - What would you do? (warning, contains very graphic pictures)

It is that dark area. I’ve been cleaning it and it smells fine. Duck appears in good spirit. He moves it when he flaps the good one. I don’t know if the picture worked but it’s just the muscles holding it together. I’d leave it but man that bones is out and there’s a bit of a cavity at the...

Severly Injured Hen - What would you do? (warning, contains very graphic pictures)

How did you remove the bone? I have a duck with a compound broken humerus sticking out. I think it needs to come off just to keep a wind from dragging and at least try to stave off infection. He doesn't seem to mind the broken wing at all. Did you subdue the bird at all before the surgeries?

    Graphic Pics- Wing Amputation Advise?

Hello! I have a Pekin duck that has its winb broken at the humurus. It is protruding through the skin. He doesn't seem to care which is incredible, but I don't think it can be left that way. I can't see how it would heal lik that. I think it should come off more than likely. How in the...
