Thank you @azygous - I didn't realize chickens lose their nails regularly.
I checked on her at bedtime, and the twisted nail is now gone. Must have fallen off when she was free ranging this afternoon. Whew!
But I will keep your chilled water & pliers advice for the future. Thanks!
Hello,
1yo Golden Cuckoo Marans has a damaged toenail. Toe is puffy and sore. Nail is still attached at skin/toe, but nail has gone from being twisted sideways (Wednesday) to completely upturned (yesterday).
Thankfully, she has been eating, drinking, roosting, laying and behaving normally...

This article & thread comments are great -thank you, all, for this info!
Excited to try these ideas with my 4 sweet feather girls. I think "parrot chop" snacking will be good for their health and also for their inquisitive, curious...
Thank you, @cherrynberry for the egg article!
Yes - first time it happened she laid egg #8 - calcium coated.
2nd time - I don't know/not sure which egg in the box was hers
3rd time (today) - this afternoon she laid a #15 - it was a very soft shell. The egg looked like a limp, leaky water...
Hello BYC - Please help me figure out how to help dear pet 5mo Maran hen named Fennec.
She started laying within the last month. Since yesterday (and for the 3rd time since going into lay), she has gotten puffed up, stopped eating, and removed herself away from the other girls.
The first time...
I am a newbie flock keeper with 4mo Marans (4 diff types). I didn't know there were Lavenders - the chickens in these photos are lovely!
I will keep an eye on this thread as I continue to learn about backyard chickens and Marans. thx!
I am a newbie with 4 different Marans, 4 months old - this thread is very educational.
I didn't know Marans could be persistently broody as you've mentioned.
Thank you!
Hello BYC - I'm a new chicken addict.
Today my "baby girls" turned 4 months old. Not sure they're all girls, actually! I have 1 each of the following Marans - Cuckoo , Blue Cuckoo, Golden Cuckoo, & Blue Copper. Attached are photos from about a week ago, when they were 16 weeks old.
All 4 are...
@cluckingheck @TheOddOneOut thank you for the info & photos
I don't know for sure if there are pointy feathers? There are some that are very narrow and pointy, not the same shape as the feathers on rest of body.
I am a chicken newbie, so your insights are helpful!
Tomorrow I will take photos...
I think I have one of Blueberry's siblings?! :)
He looks very much like my barely-any-visible-copper-coloring, 14 week old Blue Copper Marans, also from Meyer Hatchery.
Photo is from a month ago, but now mine also has red comb & wattles like your Blueberry. Maybe my favorite pullet is...
Hello - very sorry you lost your favorite hen to a squirrel. That is a tough loss :(
I'm also in SoCal - I'm a new flock keeper and haven't started free ranging my 4 hens yet. But I've been told by people in the area that squirrels will fight the chickens for food. I guess the squirrels around...
Hello and welcome! BYC is a great place to learn and ask questions. (I'm a first time flock keeper, too, and I learn something useful each time I am on BYC.)
