Just wanted to say on the whole turkey egg hatching thing...I'm hooked! We set our first clutch of eggs and had 15 hatch! We we're so excited. Heard a lot of failure stories especially from locals and hardly anyone is selling poults around here so I wasn't extremely optimistic but I just...
Just a small update: the turkey eggs have been set in the incubator today. I found my other hens nest which had 10 eggs in it so I took them. Altogether 20 eggs. Among which I have marked the one that was rained on and the other clutch had set out during a night that had low 20 degree temps...
I would have never found their nest if they didn't have the first egg out in the open.. After that they covered the eggs with leaves every time they laid one.
Random question but if you don't mind me veering off topic, my tom is a year old and has never been dewormed. But the past two days...
The dog igloo was what the original breeder i bought from uses. I didnt have the funds for one but I found a cheap tote at Walmart and cut a hole in the side then wedged it in the raspberry bushes next to the nest they had made. I put in pine shavings and 3 old eggs and tried to cover with some...
I have a couple questions:
First, my hens are laying their eggs outside along the woodline. They prefer this over a nesting box it seems. I've been collecting their eggs to incubate and leaving the oldest ones out there to keep them laying in the same spot because its hard to find their nests...
Being all 4 related they all have this look (as far as caruncles, snoods, etc.) so im assuming if I can get a confident answer to this bird I can probably assume the same on the others. I'm currently looking into my options for finding hens of a similar age because I am afraid I have 4 toms 😩...
I am having a pretty tough time telling whether or not my 4 blue slate turkeys are male or female, going off of the typical things to look for...
They're 4 months old on the 1st of Sept.
But trying to get front view, side shot, and behind photos that are in focus is proving to be harder than...
That gives me hope! Sadly I lost one little one last night 😔 but these things just happen. Everyone else seems do be doing well, even the other sickly one was hopping around again! I hope this provides some immunity to whatever coccidia strain we have going on in the shed. Its hard to really...
This morning while checking on the 5 week old chicks I noticed a very bloody dropping. (Not on medicated feed). Everyone was acting fine for the most part. I took them one by one and treated with toltrazuril orally because its what I had (brand name is usually baycox, but this is the 5% solution...
In ya'lls opinion what age can I start looking for signs of gender in these?
So far I have one who is quite a bit bigger than the others with thicker legs and just carries a little different, hoping for 1 tom and 4 hens 😂
Thank you, I'm still trying to figure that out. i had the choice to have 5 of the blue slate colored but I had to have this little black one, lol. As far as the variety goes, is it not still a blue slate? Or a whole different variety of turkey? And from my understanding does Black x blue slate...
Hi all!
Today I went to pick up 5 blue slate poults. They hatched 1st week of May and have been with their mommas until today. I've had chickens, guineas, quail, and ducks but it seems each animal comes with its own learning curve.
Going into buying i wasn't sure if I was going to get newly...
Well, plans got flipped around! The chicks ended up going to the quarantine pen out in the main chicken shed. I got a message from the breeder we were on the wait list to get blue slate turkeys from that they were ready and I didn't expect them this soon 😂 so we hurried up and got the place...
Hey all! I posted back in February about plans to build a 10x10 coop for a place to brood chicks, grow out, and other miscellaneous projects. It took a while for the plan to come to fruition, but we're finally getting there. We still have a lot to do but here's some progress pictures
These are...
Is it weird I like to have them as an alarm clock? I don't mind the noise! There's just something about sitting on the porch listening to the roo crow on a warm summer morning while drinking your coffee to kick start your day.
I also love how he communicates with the neighbors roosters back...
