Comment by 'Heidi R' in article 'Silkie Eggs: All You Need To Know And More'

I appreciate this information on the Silkie. In early Spring, I bought a Silkie rooster as a companion for my chickens who had earlier lost a rooster. This little guy had just matured enough to fit the bill. He was just about the cutest addition to the harem of 13 and slowly was accepted and an...

Review by 'Heidi R' in article '"Hentirement"'

:thumbsup I am so impressed by your article. Not only is it beautifully written but is fortifies my thoughts exactly. It is on point, at least for those of us that enjoy chickens and do not mass produce eggs/chickens for a bottom line. Your chickens are fortunate as are mine. They deserve their...

    Call Ducks

I've had some call ducks along with my pair of wood ducks. Fishers got in and joy killed. They were fenced in high fencing but not overhead. Of course their house was quite safe but I let them into their yard most days. Fishers are the most evil predators to have.

Thank you for welcoming me. I look forward to learning more about various chickens and getting tips/hints from everyone on this site. Like your name "DucksAreBest" - I had a domestically-bred pair of wood ducks for many years. They're gone now but I am also very fond of call ducks.

    "Chicken-Hawks"

I don't believe the hawks fly in numbers. You most likely have vultures which do fly and glide in numbers. They will not bother live birds in my experience. We have flying predators and they are unique in that the pair will fly alone. When they begin their hunt, they call out. Happens every...

    Call Ducks

Additional. Checked out the link. That it possible but I'd need two - Can be done - Spring for me though. Doing little to nothing right now. Just maintaining and keeping birds in hay for warmth. More snow tomorrow/Friday. Grrr

    Call Ducks

No I have not. My yard is too big, but I'm guessing. Have to check out the link and check out measurements. I have two paddocks and one good-size play area for both the fowl and horses in which they can romp over the winter. It gives them free access and they can get in and out. But like I said...

Hello all! I'm Heidi and live in Connecticut. I've had horses, chickens & ducks, dogs, and cats all my adult life. At this time, I have cut down a lot and have two mini horses, and 4 birds. I'm joining because I am most interested in the chocolate brown Maran layers, the Easter Eggers (which I...

    Call Ducks

Am new to the site and hope I'm not repetitive. At the present time I have only 4 birds that are practically old enough to vote. I have lost a number of the birds to hawks flying overhead and old age. Am considering getting three Call ducks and three Maran chickens. Any advice - property is...
