Dual purpose- but where to buy them?

Somebody farther up recommended Emmett Wilder for Dominiques, I'm going to second him! I'm on the east coast but if I'd been farther west I would have tried to buy from him. Here is the Dominique Club of America breeder's directory: https://dominiqueclub.org/breeders-directory/. When I was...

Searching for good quality, heritage chick breeders

Thanks for the suggestion! I've actually happened upon this farm before and it seems really cool. In the time since I made this post, though, I did find a breeder for Dominiques so I'm no longer looking, but thanks again!

Chicks lost in the mail - is there any chance they're still alive?

Oh for sure, I don't at all expect people to stop shipping birds and I definitely don't think all experiences of it are like mine. But I do think it's true that it's probably not good for them and it's worth considering local options. But to each his own :)

Chicks lost in the mail - is there any chance they're still alive?

Especially after this experience, I feel like that too. Besides, wouldn't it be nice to get birds locally and know they do well in your climate, have someone who knows them well to guide you, and be able to source more nearby? There's a lot of benefits to raising the same breed as your...

Chicks lost in the mail - is there any chance they're still alive?

They were in the mail three whole days, and were shipped the day after they were born. Sadly, even though ten arrived alive, only 3 survived the first day.

Chicks lost in the mail - is there any chance they're still alive?

My three survivors enjoying the dirt I plunked in their brooder! I believe I have 2 roos and 1 hen.

WANTED - Dominiques, any age, drivable distance from Mt. Airy, MD

They did not make it. I think it was just from really bad stress but I am worried I did something wrong. Although the breeder originally set 25 eggs and said all of them were viable, then lost 10 in the days leading up to hatching, which makes me think there could be a disease/genetic issue? I...

WANTED - Dominiques, any age, drivable distance from Mt. Airy, MD

I would definitely prefer to do that, I'm just worried about relying 100% on this plan since I believe I only have one hen (Doms are sex linked).

WANTED - Dominiques, any age, drivable distance from Mt. Airy, MD

I recently ordered 25 Dominique chicks from a breeder, but due to incubator and shipping problems I now only have 3. I would still love to start a flock of them but am weary of shipping chickens again. Does anyone have some Doms, preferably females, you're looking to rehome or sell? I am not...

Chicks lost in the mail - is there any chance they're still alive?

I bought them from a private breeder, and he's offered to send replacements but he has to set more eggs for it. So it would be another 4 weeks until they'd arrive and I just don't think I'm comfortable shipping chicks in November. The breeder is only having me pay for the ones still living in a...

Chicks lost in the mail - is there any chance they're still alive?

Maybe I should do that next time. I lost a few more to what I can only attribute to stress from shipping and I'm starting to think this mail order thing is more heartbreak than it's worth. Other people seem to have good experiences though so maybe I'm just the exception :(

Chicks lost in the mail - is there any chance they're still alive?

Just wanted to post a quick (and happy!) update! The tracking updated this morning, which I didn't notice until noon (the post office did not call as they'd promised to, but oh well). We went to go pick them up fully prepared for 15 dead birds, but were greeted with loud peeping! Only 2 arrived...

Chicks lost in the mail - is there any chance they're still alive?

I'm just so devastated by this. I was going to buy 25 Dominique chicks from a private breeder in August, but he wasn't able to set the eggs until September so they only hatched on the 29th, much later in the year than I'd planned, and only 15 of the 25 hatched. He mailed them on the afternoon of...

Day Old Dominique Chicks from Private Breeder

That's a great idea, I'll do some more poking around to see if it might work for me. Thanks so much for the suggestion! And if you can think of any BYC members in my area, please do let them know I'll have some good heritage cockerels I'll need to get off my hands ;)

Day Old Dominique Chicks from Private Breeder

I haven't tried either of those, but they're great ideas, thanks! I did make posts on two FaceBook groups, on the Dominique specific group (that post has been pending for 2 months :() and on the Maryland poultry swap group, which got no offers. I should probably try again when I actually have...

Day Old Dominique Chicks from Private Breeder

Oh my gosh, I can't believe I forgot to put that in the post! I'm in central Maryland, about 15 minutes east of Mt. Airy. Anyone would be welcome to pick them up, and we could do drop off as well within a reasonable distance.

Day Old Dominique Chicks from Private Breeder

Hey everyone! I made a post about this a few months back but didn't get much interest. I am ordering 25 day old, straight run Dominique chicks from a private breeder sometime this summer/fall (the timing is a little hazy because the breeder is running a very small, family operation) and was...

    Dominique Thread!

Unfortunately if I ever get around to selling hatching eggs, it'll probably be awhile down the road. I did a lot of looking around to find good Doms so I know the limited resources can be frustrating, but I will say that Nantahala Farm and Egg Well Farm both sell Dom hatching eggs and seem to be...

    Dominique Thread!

I've read the whole preview of it on Amazon, haha! I would love to read the rest of the book too, it certainly seems to be a classic among Dom owners. Thanks for the recommendation!

    Dominique Thread!

Yes, the plan is to breed pure Doms! I want to breed more for egg/meat production, foraging capabilities, broodiness, etc, than show quality but still do plan to uphold the characteristics of the breed to the best of my ability. I'm very excited to get started, I've only heard good things about...
