Official BYC Poll: How Important Is It That You Get Eggs From Your Chickens?

We have always had chickens for the sole purpose of being self sufficient with eggs, no matter breed. We do have a heritage breed, swedish hedemora, the most local breed for us living on the Norwegian side of the border. We do have them both for eggs and to support the keep of the breed. We...

@abpatchy 44 miracles 😍 Line breeding is quite common among chicken breeders. And many breeds are saved due to one or two small flocks and are strong, healthy breeds today. We have cleaned out the nesting box. There was one egg that didn't hatch. 10 chicks out of 11 eggs.

@abpatchy So sorry to hear about the chick with deformities. If it was just one out 44, it may be just a coincidence. Are all the chicks related?

Things are happening in the mama nesting box. We hooked up a baby monitor in there. So yesterday evening we sat watching and saw at least 4 chicks. This morning my husband counted 8 chicks. And he took a picture with 8 chicks. We put food and water just outside the nesting box, so the hen can...

Do you have many chickens? Sulmtaler sounds like a nice breed❤ Breeding for show sounds like a nice hobby. Is chicken show a big thing in Germany? I don't think I have ever heard about that here in Norway, only in other European countries. Our hedemora lays on 11 eggs... We do have...

    Peeps in Europe!

Do you have a breed that go broody? We have had many breeds during the years, but there are many bred that go broody once or twice in a lifetime, and that may not be enough if one would have a sustainable flock without a incubator. The swedish hedemora is well known to go broody (often to...

    Peeps in Europe!

Hello from Norway 😍 Today we are watching our hedemora Persille, who is hatching eggs. We are on day 21, and can hear chirping under her. We are so excited, because it's been over 10 years since we've had chicken breed that go broody. So, after many years with RIR and Lohmans, we decided...

We have had wonderful weather today. The snow in front of the greenhouse are gone. So while tidying up in the barn and other things, I let out the chickens. They had to convinced that it was ok to walk through the door 😅 But then they found a paradise and was clucking, sunbathing and picking...
