Thanks. I agree, after posting I did a closer, gloved examination and don't think she actually broke her neck. Still nothing externally obvious came up while checking her out 😮💨 I think she probably passed away while on the roost and then fell off based on how she landed and the way the ground...
I don't think she got her neck stuck anywhere. I had a different Barnvelder who ripped up her neck pretty bad after getting it stuck in a crack in our fence 😣 - she survived and is healed, Since then we've taken great care to eliminate any crevices or sharp edges in or near the run.
It feels...
I went out to collect eggs this afternoon and I was devastated to find one of my 10 mo old Barnevelder hens dead beside our "chicken jungle gym". This is the first chicken death we've experienced and it was totally unexpected. I hadn't seen any signs of illness or lethargy, and I wonder if she...
Thanks everyone for weighing in, it's very reassuring to not feel alone in this.
Since the bleeding seems to have stopped on its own we're going to keep an eye on her and apply the antibiotic spray. I don't think it can be stitched, but I'm reading mixes messages on a loose wrap? I'm worried...
I just checked on her again and bleeding does seemed to have slowed/stopped so I did end up applying the poultry antibiotic spray. There is no flap of skin unfortunately, it's almost as if it got completely ripped off and then...devoured? It's such a mystery to me that such a large piece of skin...
I can try to get a better picture, but I can assure you the whole bloody spot in the photo is a wide open injury. It is still bleeding. I'm worried about applying any pressure of material to stop the bleeding because it is so big and so exposed. What would work best?
Went out to do chicken chores this morning, and found our 9-month-old Barnevelder hen sitting in the coop alone with a gaping wound bleeding from her neck. The rest of the hens and two roosters were already out in the run. I have separated her into a clean large kennel in our basement and she is...
Our 8 month old partridge rock has started looking ROUGH in the past couple of weeks -- she's always been the smallest among our standard hens but she seems to have lost weight and is losing feathers on her body and especially her neck and head.
I believe she's too young to be going through the...
We haven't done anything yet and at least 3 of our 8 young pullets did end up laying in the past couple weeks, much to my surprise. We intend to put up artificial lighting but just haven't gotten around to it yet 🙃 January sounds about right for when we'll get to it
Set up: Our pullets turn eighteen weeks this weekend and none of them look anywhere close to getting ready to lay an egg. In the bunch there are Barnevelders, Mille Fleur D'uccles, Blue Fauvacanas, and Blue Copper Marans.
Context: Our chicks from earlier in the spring all started laying around...
Rehoming my two roosters!
Barnevelder rooster, 7 mos old
Super Blue Easter Egger rooster, 7 mos old
Both located in Helena, MT
Looking for new homes for my two roosters - we just bought a house in town so my two favorite boys won't make the cut due to noise ordinances.💔
Both are 7 months old...

I have two 12 week old Barnevelders with very different feathering. I think they're both pullets based on comb development at this point, but one of them has coloring more similar to our 6mo old Barnevelder rooster (more black and green).
Do folks agree? These are two pullets?
Barnevelder 1...
My second round of chicks this year are twelve weeks old and I think most of them are pullets. However, one of my blue copper marans is giving me pause because of how red their comb is relative to the other chicks.
What do we think pullet or cockerel?
For comparison, here's our other blue...
I know you're asking @clickchicks but wanted to share some of my own photos (I know I always like to see more photos and I'm feeling highly motivated this morning🤷♀️). I do have one mature Barnevelder already who turned out to be a rooster (he had black chest feathers as a chick) and my...
