Heritage breed turkeys - better with chickens?

I have a layer flock, raise broilers occasionally, and for a couple of years, have grown out a few broad-breasted turkeys. A few years ago, I raised a new batch of birds (layers) in a place that did not have poultry on it previously. I also grew out about 10 broad-breasted turkeys with this new...

    Virginia Anyone???

Hello from Grayson County. Don't know if it's OK to post this here, but... I have three black australorp hens hatched late last summer for sale, $12 each. These young hens are healthy and laying great, I just need to downsize. I also have a BA cockerel that I am planning to eat, but I would...

Coturnix not laying (7 months old)

I agree with JJ. Had some like that here, put some christmas lights in the cages and wow a week later started getting some eggs. I did the egg test first, no egg eaters. It is fustrating to say the least to have that many bird and no eggs. How many christmas lights would it take? (3' x 6' pen)...

Coturnix not laying (7 months old)

I would suggest just letting the hens grow another week to 8 weeks. Lights are important, but eggs from a 7 week old coturnix hen are really pushing it! You can spotlight the pen, but 7 week old layer coturnix hens are really pushing the envelop of coturnix myth! they are 7 MONTHS (+/- 28...

Coturnix not laying (7 months old)

I butchered some a couple of months ago, and of course there are both males and females. They are on the north side of building, not in direct sunlight. No changes in feed - they have been on Purina gamebird breeder/layer since they were 8 weeks old. Weather is fluctuating right now, highs in...

Coturnix not laying (7 months old)

They have been in the same pen, in the same place since they came out of the brooder. I have thought about egg eating before, and have kept an eye out for shell fragments (have seen none). Seems unlikely that they would eat every single bit of every single egg. Also, no crowing/singing and...

Coturnix not laying (7 months old)

I'm in sw VA. I have heard that they need 14 hours of light, but that's also the standard line about chickens, and they for sure don't need 14 full hours to lay at least some. These quail were hatched last August, and didn't lay last fall. NO eggs yet. Would it help to split them into...

Coturnix not laying (7 months old)

I have about 25 7-month-old A&M coturnix, all together in a wire-bottom pen. They have yet to lay the first egg, and I have heard no crowing/singing. Are they that much more sensitive to daylength than chickens (my chickens have been laying good for a while now)? I have had them on 20%...

    Freedom Ranger flavor/texture

I butchered and barbecued a Freedom Ranger last weekend (7 weeks, 5 lbs. live weight). The flavor and texture were great, as I expected. For those of you who have waited until 10-12 weeks for processing - are the birds still tender enough for broiling/grilling then? Thanks
