    Bare Ground or Straw?

Easy answer that we learned from a commercial pullet seller, peat moss as your coops floor covering. The pests don't like it, and won't live in it. The ladies love pooping and peeing in it, it need only be scraped out once every 2 months as it absorbs like crazy (4inch thick), and odors are...

how were they fed 500, 1000, 3000 years ago

What do you folks know about smallholder feeding of livestock? Johanna and I were discussing are chicken's inattentiveness to the laying mash or pellets we buy them as long as they can get out on the grass. Their eggs are as plentiful as during the winter when we rely on corporate grains...

Comment by 'wildswanfarm' in article 'Bedding Part 1: Comparing Materials'

We were taught a no brainer this Fall. Peat moss on the coop floor, and pellets of pine used by the horse owners locally. Fill a bucket 1/2 full of those pellet stove pellets, fill up the bucket with water. After the pellets soak up the water you dump out onto a dry surface and let it dry. It...

Can I put my chicken run over a septic field?

Chickens CAN dig pretty deep, so bear that in mind. Our birds have access right now to the drainfield and will have another area adjacent to it which is even larger, so they won't always be digging on the field, but... Cheers.

Can I put my chicken run over a septic field?

My wife just asked this question of me yesterday as I'm moving our birds away from the house to the back of the property. In fact, I've done extensive prep to do so.! as in cutting down and bucking a row of wild plum and what not in a week long spree of labor that created a myriad of aches and...

is it really okay for chickens to forage ithe compost?

They LOOOOOOOVE it!! Good for them too! Also, if you live near the ocean, feed them seaweed. The eggs become orange and NEVER taste fishy.

can we feed raw flour (wheat, sorghum, rye, etc.) to the ladies?

We want to rid ourselves of a large bag of mostly gluten free flour to our birds? We've fed them a small amount and we'd like to finish a 15lb. that's left in the bag. We don't like the mix for ourselves, but don't want to waste it!

Hen dead, young pullet with poopy vent

Soooooo. The lovely wife checks for afternoon eggs today, and one of our 2 year old Rhode Island hens is stiff in a layng box. OK, so we're thinking, she was the one with a poopy vent moving slowly for 2+ days now, and there is a pullet from last July ( a lovely Cochin), who has a poopy vent as...

chickens pooing in laying boxes arghhh!

Until we had chicks come along in the Spring, oue hens all layed in their boxes, and pooed everywhere else. But...do to being harassed by the birds, our Miss Jean Broody took her babes and taught them to stay away from the other hens . That included sleeping in the boxes while the other hens...

Hen's first hatch, so when or if chicks need starter

Thank you CochinBrahmaLover. We also introduced three Partridge Cochin 3 day old chicks to her last night, and this morning she seems to have accepted them. We are planning to move her and the chicks down to the floor of the coop into a large protected cage area as we will be back and forth...

Hen's first hatch, so when or if chicks need starter

Our hen has hatched her first of 7 eggs. Will the chick (or chicks) need starter feed, or will the hen guide them to the layer mash?

Broody hen entering 3rd week with 7 eggs!

Thank you "chillin" !! Advice worth taking. Our other fear was that the nest she is in is 4 1/2 feet off the coop floor, which has us worrying about chicks falling...? If that is not to be feared, all is well. Thanks again! Dirk and Johanna

Broody hen entering 3rd week with 7 eggs!

Hello all. We have a year old broody hen. To be precise, "Miss Jean Broody". We've marked 7 eggs since the 2nd of June and have kept the other 16 hen's eggs away from her. We realize it's a bit late, even here on Vancouver Island with our late & cool summer, but it is our first go at having a...
