When to move the chicks to their coop?

For sure...The primary reason we removed the brooder was the inconvenience for my 12 yr old daughter. I built it out of salvaged window screens and it was too tall for her to easily care for the chicks. In the coop, I built two levels of temporary roosts. Interesting, four of the 1 week old...

When to move the chicks to their coop?

We had a similar situation as yours this Spring. We had 6 five week old chicks and 20 day old chicks. We built a coop in an unheated pole barn and initially put the brooder inside the coop. After one day we got rid of the brooder; all 26 chicks were together and we had zero issues. The fist day...

    Wood’s Coop / First Timers

Thanks! We’ve been wanting chickens from the time we moved out of town 5 yrs ago. The deal was when I finished the house we could get some. Well...I’ve been trying to build a house on my days off for the past 5 yrs...then I started a pole barn....then I had 1/2 a house and 1/2 a barn....I...

    Wood’s Coop / First Timers

Yep, 12x14. Taking the barn down would not be fun :hmm Speaking of barn, I have some left over siding and old corrugated metal from last Summer when we sided it so that’s the plan for the coop as well. It will look like this when it’s done. Also, yours and a few other posts pushed me towards...

    Wood’s Coop / First Timers

For sure; I have a big old heavy flatbed I plan on dragging it with! Next we added kids, chicks, heat, light, food and water. So far so good! Next days off we’ll add siding and roofing and drag it outside and build a run of some sorts. Thanks

    Wood’s Coop / First Timers

We then added a door (forgot to take a pic) and built a few fun things for the inside of the coop.

Then built / framed the front, middle, and rear walls. We used some salvaged and new lumber.

    Wood’s Coop / First Timers

We jumped in head first. Built a Brooder with some old window screens; filled it full of chicks, then built out first coop! The kids and I had a blast and it was great quality time. I work away from home and the chickens have really brought my daughter and I together while I’m away. We’re always...

    Dark Brahma: Hen or Roo?

Well I guess we have two Brahma girls. Thank you! Bug, the small one was overly aggressive towards us at 4 weeks when we added a dozen chicks to the mix. She left the other four older (4 week) chicks and wouldn’t leave the day old chicks. If we reached over to grab a chick she would immediately...

    Dark Brahma: Hen or Roo?

Good deal; that’s what we were were hoping. The second dark Brahma is much smaller with similar markings but much more aggressive towards us and the other chicks...thought he might be a rooster because of the “attitude” but the coloring is the same.

    Dark Brahma: Hen or Roo?

First flock and first post! Curious what the experts think the sex of the dark Brahma (top center) is? We have two and they seem a bit different than the rest. He or she is about 6-7 weeks old; thanks! I love this site, prowled around for a few months then took the plunge. Built a woods coop...
