I think Red Star sex links are the best I've ever had! Although RIR and Barred Rocks are also very good! My red star laid the biggest brown egg's I have ever seen!! It was always in the same place and before 7am. She might have skipped a day once a month at the most!

I have RIR and BR and they will be a year old in February. I've noticed that their legs seem to be changing to a more pale yellow. What causes that? Is it their age? do they have worms? should I be supplementing them with something for it? Is it the weather?

I say HEN! I have RIR, BR, & Delawares. I got them all as day old chicks, and they matured at different times. I would say that you should be getting an egg any day now! Some were a lot more red and larger than others. Those girls started laying eggs first and then the others caught up and...
I know you can use Piperazine for a dewormer as well. It is not FDA approved which is why it is not recommend for laying hens, however the eggs are FDA approved after 17 days from the treatment. Perhaps this will help you.

I had 6 silkies just hatch this week. Not sure what they all are yet though. I also have large brown egg layers. Don't know if you would be interested in them? I have red and black sex links coming next week, so you could get them as chicks and know for sure they are hens.

I water down my food for some of my birds and they do just fine with it. I change it every day. I remove anything they didn't eat, wash out the dish and put new in there with more water. It seams to work out well for us, and I don't waste as much food that way.
